ANALYSIS: As an average to slightly above-average foe, Siena should probably not be discounted by opponents this year. Their record this season is 17-17, and the club is ranked 162nd overall (out of 351) in Haslametrics' most recent ratings. They are also ranked by this site as the #4 team (out of 11) in the MAAC (average ranking 203.1).
Based on the data, Siena will likely find more success on offense than on defense. Scoring about 102 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO, they currently occupy the #154 slot in the rankings for offensive efficiency. Siena will routinely look to penetrate, pound the ball inside, and score from as short a distance as possible. The ball-club is 14th in the NCAA in ratio of near-proximity attempts to total field goal attempts. As far as converting those near-proximity shots goes, the team shoots 57.8% vs. AO, which falls somewhere in the middle of the pack of the rankings in that category. Siena is also one of the better teams in the country when it comes to converting scoring chances off of offensive rebounds. Against AO, the team successfully converts 8.1% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked 46th nationally).
Siena is not quite as good on the defensive end of the floor. The team is ranked 186th in defensive efficiency, allowing about 103 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Although their defense isn't the greatest, Siena doesn't stand out as being especially horrible in any one particular area on that end of the court, and they fall outside the bottom-100 in every one of the defensive categories we take into consideration for this analysis.
Siena has been playing some of its most efficient basketball of the season recently and is presently ranked 20th in positive momentum. Siena is also one of the most consistent teams in NCAA basketball (currently ranked sixth in consistency), which makes the outcomes of their upcoming games far easier to predict.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Siena does worse vs. clubs that tend to get off more shots. When playing squads that have an offensive field goal attempt rate vs. AO greater than 82.74, Siena performs above average 39% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 76% of the time.
Siena performs worse against squads that fail to defend efficiently inside the paint. When facing teams that have a defensive near-proximity field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 60.17%, Siena is more efficient than normal 36% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 74% of the time.
When playing teams that find ways to get to the free throw line, Siena usually performs better than average. Siena is more efficient than normal 85% of the time when facing clubs that have an offensive free throw attempt rate vs. AO greater than 26.97. In all other contests, Siena performs better than average 48% of the time.
