ANALYSIS: Savannah State presently has one of the below-average teams in college basketball. Their record this season is 13-16, and the club is ranked 319th overall (out of 351) in Haslametrics' most recent ratings. Of the 13 schools in the MEAC (average ranking 319.3), they're currently ranked as our #5 team in the conference. With a strength-of-schedule rating of 0.319 (which ranks 328th in the nation), Savannah State has faced some of the easiest opponents in all of college basketball.
Savannah State will certainly not be one of the stingier defenses opponents will encounter. Allowing more than 111 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked down at #323 in defensive efficiency. Savannah State gives up far too many offensive rebounds and second chances to their opponents. The club has a rating of 17.86 vs. AO in potential points allowed off of second chances (341st nationally), and they let AO convert a healthy 9.0% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked 334th) as well. Savannah State also allows opposing teams far too many easy chances from the floor, ranking in the bottom-50 in three of the four main defensive field goal shooting categories. They are exceptionally deficient defending inside the three-point line, allowing AO to make good on 41.7% of their mid-range jumpers (341st in the nation), 66.1% of their near-proximity chances (319th), and 47.3% of their total shots from the field (303rd). If Savannah State does have a bright spot on defense, it would have to be their willingness to take risks in order to score fast points off of steals. The team has a solid rating of 13.42 in potential points scored off of steals vs. AO, which ranks 34th-best in college basketball.
Savannah State doesn't rate much better on offense than they do on defense. Scoring roughly 95 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #281 in the nation in offensive efficiency. Savannah State has had serious struggles making their free throws this year. Converting just 63.3% of their attempts, the squad is ranked #337 overall in free throw percentage. Savannah State also has a hard time converting field goals attempts on offense. The team is rated #322 in the country in field goal percentage, making good on a meager 39.9% of their attempts vs. AO. If Savannah State does have a strength offensively, it would have to be the team's care for the ball. The squad has a rating of 9.14 in potential points allowed off of steals vs. AO, which ranks 45th in the college game.
Savannah State has been playing better basketball in their most recent outings, as evidenced by the team's #36 ranking in positive momentum.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When playing teams that find ways to get to the free throw line, Savannah State usually performs worse than average. Savannah State is more efficient than normal 40% of the time when facing clubs that have an offensive free throw attempt rate vs. AO greater than 26.66. In all other contests, Savannah State performs better than average 83% of the time.
Savannah State is typically worse vs. teams that effectively clean the offensive glass. Against foes that have an offensive second-chance potential point rate vs. AO greater than 14.21, Savannah State performs above their norm 47% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 88% of the time.
