ANALYSIS: Not one of the better ball-clubs in college basketball, Savannah State should be a fairly easy win for most capable opponents. Haslametrics has them ranked 337th overall (out of 351) in All-Play Percentage, and the team holds a record of 9-22. They are also ranked by this site as the #12 team (out of 13) in the MEAC (average ranking 284.1).
Offense comes as a real struggle to Savannah State this year. The team is rated third from the bottom in offensive efficiency and scores fewer than 83 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Savannah State has had serious struggles making their free throws this year. Converting just 57.7% of their attempts, the squad is ranked #351 overall in free throw percentage. Savannah State is also one of the least accurate teams when shooting from long-distance. They are ranked second from the bottom in three-point field goal percentage nationally and make just 26.7% of their attempts from long vs. AO. Savannah State is lastly downright rotten when shooting the mid-range jumper. The team is ranked 335th in field goal percentage from that distance, making only 30.2% of their mid-range attempts vs. AO.
Even though the team ranks considerably higher in defensive efficiency, Savannah State isn't a powerhouse on that end of the floor either. Allowing roughly 104 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #219 in the nation in defensive efficiency. Savannah State is one of the very worst teams in the country in terms of overall defensive field goal percentage. The ball-club ranks #343 nationally in field goal percentage allowed, as AO will convert approximately 49.0% of their total attempts from the floor. Savannah State also fouls far too much and sends the opposition to the line way too often. With a defensive free throw attempt rate of 35.21 vs. AO, the squad is ranked #333 in the country in that category. Savannah State lastly does an extremely poor job to deny the opposition behind the arc. They rank 332nd nationally in defensive three-point percentage, allowing AO to make 38.3% of their attempts from afar. Luckily, AO will take nowhere near as many threes as they typically would, and only 30.0% of AO's field goal attempts will come from downtown. If Savannah State does have a bright spot on defense, it would have to be their ability to limit the number of shot attempts by the opposition. The team has a defensive field goal attempt rate of 72.63 vs. AO, which ranks second-best in college basketball.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Savannah State performs better against squads that convert well from the charity stripe. When facing teams that have an adjusted free throw percentage vs. AO greater than 67.41%, Savannah State is more efficient than normal 81% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 31% of the time.
When playing teams that are likely to allow more second chances off of offensive rebounds, Savannah State usually performs better than average. Savannah State is more efficient than normal 79% of the time when facing clubs that have a defensive second-chance potential point rate vs. AO greater than 16.65. In all other contests, Savannah State performs better than average 40% of the time.
Savannah State is typically worse vs. teams that aren't terribly skilled defensively. Against foes that have a defensive efficiency rating vs. AO greater than 101.10, Savannah State performs above their norm 44% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 82% of the time.
