ANALYSIS: Santa Clara has a fairly solid squad that likely falls within the top quartile of all teams in college basketball this year. They have a record of 21-12 and are ranked 76th overall (out of 358) in the latest Haslametrics ratings. They are also ranked by this site as the #5 team (out of 10) in the WCC (average ranking 130.2).
Santa Clara has a reasonably potent offensive attack. Occupying the #31 slot in our offensive efficiency rankings, they will score about 110 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Santa Clara will routinely look to penetrate, pound the ball inside, and score from as short a distance as possible. The ball-club is fifth in the NCAA in ratio of near-proximity attempts to total field goal attempts. If you do allow them to get to the inside, they are undoubtedly capable of making you pay. Presently rated in the top-50 in near-proximity shooting percentage, they make roughly 63.8% of their attempts from short-distance vs. AO. Santa Clara is also one of the best field goal shooting teams that opposing defenses will have the displeasure of facing this season. The squad is ranked ninth in the country in field goal percentage, making approximately 49.1% of their attempts vs. AO. They especially shine when chucking the three, shooting 38.5% from behind the arc vs. AO (rated #9 in the NCAA).
Though they're not quite as efficient defensively as they are offensively, Santa Clara still does OK when the opposition has possession of the ball. The team ranks 144th nationally in defensive efficiency, allowing about 99 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Santa Clara does a bang-up job preventing the opposition from draining jumpers in between the three-point line and the low post. They're ranked 14th in Division I in defensive mid-range field goal percentage, allowing AO to make good on only 32.4% of their attempts from that distance. Santa Clara also does a pretty solid job avoiding careless fouls and minimizing opponents' opportunities from the free throw line. With a defensive free throw attempt rate of 19.50 vs. AO, they are currently rated 26th in the country in that category. If Santa Clara does exhibit a noticeable weakness on the defensive end of the floor, it'd likely be the team's propensity to allow too many shot attempts per trip. The squad has a rating of 88.75 in defensive field goal attempt rate vs. AO, which ranks 15th-worst in college basketball.
On the road, Santa Clara performs somewhat better than their norm, as the squad is nationally ranked 45th in our away-from-home metric.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Santa Clara performs better against squads that typically allow more than a fair share of breakaway opportunities. When facing teams that have a potential point rate allowed off steals vs. AO greater than 10.12, Santa Clara is more efficient than normal 61% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 20% of the time.
When playing teams that do not defend well on the perimeter, Santa Clara usually performs better than average. Santa Clara is more efficient than normal 61% of the time when facing clubs that have a defensive three-point field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 31.52%. In all other contests, Santa Clara performs better than average 20% of the time.
Santa Clara is typically better vs. teams that allow opponents to shoot well from the field. Against foes that have a defensive field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 41.31%, Santa Clara performs above their norm 67% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 27% of the time.
