ANALYSIS: UCSB is not one of the better teams in Division I this year. Haslametrics has them ranked 324th overall (out of 351) in All-Play Percentage, and the team holds a record of 6-22. Of the nine schools in the Big West (average ranking 256.1), they're currently ranked as the worst team in the conference.
Offense comes as a real struggle to UCSB this year. The team is rated 328th in offensive efficiency and scores fewer than 91 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. UCSB shoots dreadfully from the floor and ranks in the bottom-25 in three of our four major field goal shooting categories. They are at their worst when shooting outside the paint, converting just 29.0% of their three-pointers (seventh from the bottom in the nation), 31.8% of their mid-range chances (334th), and 38.8% of their total shots from the field (339th) vs. AO. UCSB is also not one of the better teams when it comes to sinking foul shots. Converting just 65.5% of their attempts, the squad is ranked #310 overall in free throw percentage. If UCSB does have a strength offensively, it would have to be the team's ability to successfully get off shots each possession. The squad has a field goal attempt rate of 86.00 vs. AO, which ranks #20 in college basketball.
UCSB doesn't rate much better on defense than they do on offense. Allowing roughly 108 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #280 in the nation in defensive efficiency. UCSB has done a lackluster job this year when defending the mid-range shot. The squad is ranked 324th nationally in defensive mid-range field goal percentage, allowing AO to make good on 40.5% of their attempts from those in-between spots on the floor.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When facing teams that typically allow more than a fair share of breakaway opportunities, UCSB often performs worse than normal. UCSB is more efficient than usual 42% of the time when facing teams that have a potential point rate allowed off steals vs. AO greater than 10.74. In their other contests, UCSB performs better than the norm 100% of the time.
UCSB does better vs. clubs that prefer the outside shot. When playing squads that have an offensive shooting proximity score vs. AO greater than 2.04, UCSB performs above average 89% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 44% of the time.
UCSB performs worse against squads that have trouble defending the mid-range shot. When facing teams that have a defensive mid-range field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 37.94%, UCSB is more efficient than normal 40% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 83% of the time.
