ANALYSIS: They're far from the worst of the worst, but Quinnipiac should not be a terribly frightening opponent for most clubs. They have a record of 9-13 and are ranked 256th overall (out of 357) in the latest Haslametrics ratings. Of the 11 schools in the MAAC (average ranking 258.6), they're currently ranked as our #5 team in the conference. With a strength-of-schedule rating of 0.263 (which ranks 340th in the nation), Quinnipiac has faced some of the easiest opponents in all of college basketball.
If there is a strength for Quinnipiac this year, it's probably on the defensive end of the court. The team is rated 145th in defensive efficiency, allowing fewer than 99 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO. Quinnipiac has been fairly decent in preventing teams from draining shots from between the three-point stripe and the low post. They're ranked 64th in Division I in defensive mid-range field goal percentage, allowing AO to make good on only 34.9% of their attempts from that distance. If Quinnipiac does exhibit a noticeable weakness on the defensive end of the floor, it'd likely be the team's issues trying to stop opponents from obtaining and converting second-chance opportunities via offensive rebounds. The squad has a defensive second-chance conversion percentage of 6.8% vs. AO, which ranks 25th-worst in the nation.
Unfortunately, Quinnipiac is not even remotely close to being as good on offense as they are on defense. The team is ranked 307th in offensive efficiency, scoring about 91 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Quinnipiac tends to be very careless with the ball and allows far too many breakaway opportunities off of their own turnovers. The team's rating for potential breakaway points allowed off of steals vs. AO is 14.46, which ranks 340th in D1. Quinnipiac also struggles to drain shots consistently from most spots on the floor, ranking in the bottom-50 in three of the four primary field goal shooting categories. They are worse off shooting inside the three-point stripe, making good on just 33.4% of their mid-range jumpers (321st in the nation), 52.7% of their near-proximity chances (333rd), and 39.9% of their total shots from the field (324th) vs. AO.
When playing on the road, Quinnipiac performs somewhat worse than they normally do on their home court. The club is nationally ranked 328th in our site's away-from-home metric.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When facing teams that convert well from outside the arc, Quinnipiac often performs better than normal. Quinnipiac is more efficient than usual 57% of the time when facing teams that have an offensive three-point field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 31.27%. In their other contests, Quinnipiac performs better than the norm 13% of the time.
Quinnipiac does better vs. clubs that aren't terribly skilled defensively. When playing squads that have a defensive efficiency rating vs. AO greater than 100.83, Quinnipiac performs above average 58% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 20% of the time.
Quinnipiac performs better against squads that allow more chances at the line. When facing teams that have a defensive free throw attempt rate vs. AO greater than 27.12, Quinnipiac is more efficient than normal 58% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 20% of the time.
