ANALYSIS: Quinnipiac presently has one of the below-average teams in college basketball. They have a record of 9-20 and are ranked 282nd overall (out of 351) in the latest Haslametrics ratings. Of the 11 schools in the MAAC (average ranking 215.2), they're currently ranked as our #9 team in the conference.
If there is a strength for Quinnipiac this year, it's probably on the defensive end of the court. The team is rated 158th in defensive efficiency, allowing fewer than 102 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO. Quinnipiac does an outstanding job shutting down the opposition from behind the arc. They rank 25th in the NCAA in defensive three-point percentage, allowing AO to make just 31.6% of their attempts from afar. For this reason, AO takes nowhere near as many threes as they typically would -- just 30.1% of AO's field goal attempts will be from downtown. Quinnipiac has also been pretty good preventing teams from hitting shots in the paint. They are ranked 71st in the country in defensive near-proximity percentage, allowing AO to make good on only 56.0% of their attempts from close-up. And to capitalize on that weakness, this team will make AO shoot from the inside more than they usually would. Of AO's total field goals, a big portion of them (40.6%) will be from short-distance.
Unfortunately, Quinnipiac is not even remotely close to being as good on offense as they are on defense. The team is ranked 333rd in offensive efficiency, scoring about 90 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Quinnipiac will have a really tough time winning games when taking into consideration their shooting percentage near the basket. The team is ranked last in near-proximity field goal percentage, making only 44.2% of their attempts from up-close vs. AO. Moreover, they find themselves in the bottom-10 in overall offensive field goal percentage, converting just 36.6% of their total attempts vs. AO. Quinnipiac also tends to be very careless with the ball and allows far too many breakaway opportunities off of their own turnovers. The team's rating for potential breakaway points allowed off of steals vs. AO is 14.85, which ranks eighth from the bottom in D1. Quinnipiac lastly has had serious struggles making their free throws this year. Converting just 64.0% of their attempts, the squad is ranked #334 overall in free throw percentage. If Quinnipiac does have a strength offensively, it would have to be the team's knack for obtaining second-chance opportunities off of their frequent misses. The squad has a rating of 22.75 in potential points off of second chances vs. AO, which ranks fifth in all of college hoops.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When facing teams that favor a faster tempo, Quinnipiac often performs worse than normal. Quinnipiac is more efficient than usual 26% of the time when facing teams that have a pace vs. AO greater than 68.77. In their other contests, Quinnipiac performs better than the norm 80% of the time.
Quinnipiac does worse vs. clubs that are more proficient at draining the mid-range shot. When playing squads that have an offensive mid-range field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 35.49%, Quinnipiac performs above average 11% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 60% of the time.
Quinnipiac performs worse against squads that convert well from outside the arc. When facing teams that have an offensive three-point field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 35.72%, Quinnipiac is more efficient than normal 18% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 61% of the time.
