ANALYSIS: Purdue is one of the most elite and successful teams in college basketball this year. They have a record of 26-10 and are ranked sixth overall (out of 353) in the latest Haslametrics ratings. They are also ranked by this site as the #2 team (out of 14) in the Big Ten (average ranking 36.2). Sporting a strength-of-schedule rating of 0.801 (the fifth-highest in the country), Purdue has prepared themselves by challenging some of the best teams in the college game.
Purdue is undoubtedly one of the best in the business on offense. The team is rated first in offensive efficiency, scoring more than 123 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Purdue is one of the very best when it comes to maximizing field goal opportunities. The team is ranked first in the NCAA in offensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of 91.67 vs. AO. And when they do shoot, they make a fair portion of their shots. Ranked in the top-50 in field goal shooting percentage, the squad converts about 47.6% of their total attempts vs. AO. Purdue also appears to be one of the top-notch offensive rebounding teams you will find this year. Against AO, the squad has a rating of 18.87 in potential points scored off of second chances (ranked sixth in the NCAA), and they convert 8.1% of their second-chance opportunities (ranked 19th) as well. Purdue lastly lives and dies by the three-ball and will launch from long-distance early and often. The team ranks 11th in ratio of three-point attempts to total field goal attempts. And they'll absolutely kill you if you let them shoot from behind the arc. The squad makes 38.5% of its attempts from long-distance vs. AO, 23rd-best in the nation.
Purdue plays at roughly the same level defensively as they do offensively. The team ranks 36th nationally in defensive efficiency, allowing about 95 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Purdue does a bang-up job preventing the opposition from draining jumpers in between the three-point line and the low post. They're ranked 11th in Division I in defensive mid-range field goal percentage, allowing AO to make good on only 30.4% of their attempts from that distance. Purdue also boasts one of the better overall defensive field goal percentages in the country. The team ranks #27 nationally in field goal percentage allowed, as AO only makes good on about 39.9% of their total attempts from the floor.
Purdue has been playing some of its most efficient basketball of the season recently and is presently ranked 11th in positive momentum. Purdue has also been one of the most erratic teams in college basketball this year (currently ranked 333rd overall in consistency), which makes the outcomes of their future games far more difficult to predict. On the road, Purdue performs noticeably worse than they do at home. The team is currently ranked 335th in the country in the away-from-home metric we track.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Purdue performs better against squads that fail to defend efficiently inside the paint. When facing teams that have a defensive near-proximity field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 55.90%, Purdue is more efficient than normal 73% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 20% of the time.
When playing teams that allow a greater number of field goal opportunities, Purdue usually performs worse than average. Purdue is more efficient than normal 8% of the time when facing clubs that have a defensive field goal attempt rate vs. AO greater than 84.63. In all other contests, Purdue performs better than average 50% of the time.
Purdue is typically better vs. teams that allow more chances at the line. Against foes that have a defensive free throw attempt rate vs. AO greater than 23.43, Purdue performs above their norm 53% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 18% of the time.
