ANALYSIS: Providence has a fairly solid squad that likely falls within the top quartile of all teams in college basketball this year. Haslametrics has them ranked 35th overall (out of 351) in All-Play Percentage, and the team holds a record of 22-12. Of the 10 schools in the Big East (average ranking 53.9), they're currently ranked as our #5 team in the conference. With a strength-of-schedule rating of 0.728 (which ranks 13th nationally), Providence is one of the more battle-tested teams in the college game.
Providence has a fairly effective defensive attack. Occupying the #29 slot in our defensive efficiency ratings, they will allow about 92 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO. Providence will take a bite out of many opponents' shooting percentages, based on the fact that the team ranks in the top-50 in three of our four primary defensive field goal categories. They'll inflict the most harm on the outside, allowing AO to convert just 31.7% of their three-pointers (41st in the nation), 30.0% of their mid-range chances (sixth), and 39.9% of their total shots from the field (46th). Providence also does a pretty solid job providing themselves chances to score quickly off of steals. They're ranked 26th in potential points off of breakaway steals vs. AO with a rating of 14.38.
Providence plays at about the same level on offense as they do on defense. The team ranks 51st nationally in offensive efficiency, scoring about 108 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Providence does a super job in their efforts to get to the free throw line. With a free throw attempt rate of 34.20 vs. AO, they are ranked 19th in the nation at getting to the charity stripe, where the team shoots a rather mediocre 70.4%. Providence will also routinely look to penetrate, pound the ball inside, and score from as short a distance as possible. The ball-club is 21st in the NCAA in ratio of near-proximity attempts to total field goal attempts. As far as converting those near-proximity shots goes, the team shoots 60.9% vs. AO, which falls somewhere in the middle of the pack of the rankings in that category. Providence lastly appears to be one of the top-notch offensive rebounding teams you will find this year. Against AO, the squad has a rating of 18.82 in potential points scored off of second chances (ranked 22nd in the NCAA), and they convert 8.1% of their second-chance opportunities (ranked 50th) as well.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Providence does worse vs. clubs that are more proficient at draining the mid-range shot. When playing squads that have an offensive mid-range field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 35.71%, Providence performs above average 35% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 82% of the time.
Providence performs worse against squads that convert well from the charity stripe. When facing teams that have an adjusted free throw percentage vs. AO greater than 71.24%, Providence is more efficient than normal 29% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 65% of the time.
When playing teams that find ways to get to the free throw line, Providence usually performs worse than average. Providence is more efficient than normal 39% of the time when facing clubs that have an offensive free throw attempt rate vs. AO greater than 30.22. In all other contests, Providence performs better than average 73% of the time.
