ANALYSIS: There are very few Division I teams, if any, that are as bad as Presbyterian is this year. Ranked second from the bottom overall (out of 351) in our most recent ratings, they presently have a record of 5-25. They are also ranked by this site as the worst team (out of 10) in the Big South (average ranking 252.1).
Offense comes as a real struggle to Presbyterian this year. The team is rated fourth from the bottom in offensive efficiency and scores fewer than 86 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Presbyterian tends to be very careless with the ball and allows far too many breakaway opportunities off of their own turnovers. The team's rating for potential breakaway points allowed off of steals vs. AO is 15.96, which ranks third from the bottom in D1. Presbyterian also struggles to drain shots consistently from most spots on the floor, ranking in the bottom-50 in three of the four primary field goal shooting categories. They are worse off shooting inside the three-point stripe, making good on just 29.5% of their mid-range jumpers (third from the bottom in the nation), 53.4% of their near-proximity chances (321st), and 39.4% of their total shots from the field (331st) vs. AO. Presbyterian lastly does an extremely poor job drawing fouls and getting to the free throw line. With a free throw attempt rate of just 20.24 vs. AO, they are fourth from the bottom in the overall rankings for that category.
Sadly, Presbyterian is almost as horrific on the defensive end of the floor as they are on the offensive end of it. Allowing roughly 116 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #345 in the nation in defensive efficiency. Presbyterian performs really badly when attempting to stop opponents from making mid-range jumpers. The squad is ranked 335th nationally in defensive mid-range field goal percentage, allowing AO to make good on 41.4% of their attempts from those in-between spots on the floor. Thankfully, AO will take nowhere near as many mid-range shots vs. Presbyterian as they typically would, as only 23.1% of their field goal attempts will come from in-between locations. Presbyterian also does an extremely poor job to deny the opposition behind the arc. They rank 330th nationally in defensive three-point percentage, allowing AO to make 39.2% of their attempts from afar. And to expose that weakness, AO will gladly launch the three all day and all night. Of AO's total field goals, a large chunk of them (43.0%) will be from long-distance. Presbyterian is lastly extremely underskilled to force steals that turn into quick and easy points. They're ranked #329 in potential points off of breakaway steals with a rating of only 7.81 vs. AO.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Presbyterian is typically better vs. teams that do not defend well on the perimeter. Against foes that have a defensive three-point field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 35.73%, Presbyterian performs above their norm 80% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 33% of the time.
When facing teams that prefer the outside shot, Presbyterian often performs worse than normal. Presbyterian is more efficient than usual 37% of the time when facing teams that have an offensive shooting proximity score vs. AO greater than 2.01. In their other contests, Presbyterian performs better than the norm 78% of the time.
Presbyterian does better vs. clubs that have trouble defending the mid-range shot. When playing squads that have a defensive mid-range field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 38.15%, Presbyterian performs above average 73% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 35% of the time.
