ANALYSIS: Despite having a win percentage north of .500, Portland State is definitely a below-average ball-club in college hoops this year. Ranked 272nd overall (out of 351) in our most recent ratings, they presently have a record of 15-14. Of the 12 schools in the Big Sky (average ranking 243.3), they're currently ranked as our #8 team in the conference.
Portland State will certainly not be one of the stingier defenses opponents will encounter. Allowing more than 108 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked down at #317 in defensive efficiency. Portland State performs really badly when attempting to stop opponents from making mid-range jumpers. The squad is ranked ninth from the bottom nationally in defensive mid-range field goal percentage, allowing AO to make good on 41.3% of their attempts from those in-between spots on the floor. Portland State also gives up too many chances to easily score off of offensive rebounds. The team allows AO to convert 8.7% of all second-chance opportunities (321st nationally).
Though they rate better on offense than they do on defense, Portland State still isn't one of the more capable offensive teams in college hoops. Scoring roughly 97 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #227 in the nation in offensive efficiency. Portland State would not consider converting field goal attempts to be a strength. The team is rated #273 in the country in field goal percentage, making good on a meager 40.7% of their attempts vs. AO. If Portland State does have a strength offensively, it would have to be the team's outstanding shooting at the charity stripe. The squad makes 74.1% of their free throw attempts, which ranks #41 in Division I.
Portland State has been one of the more erratic teams in NCAA basketball this year (presently ranked 310th in the country in consistency), which makes forecasting the outcomes of their upcoming games tougher than most.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When playing teams that aren't terribly skilled defensively, Portland State usually performs better than average. Portland State is more efficient than normal 77% of the time when facing clubs that have a defensive efficiency rating vs. AO greater than 102.81. In all other contests, Portland State performs better than average 30% of the time.
Portland State is typically better vs. teams that do not defend well on the perimeter. Against foes that have a defensive three-point field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 34.73%, Portland State performs above their norm 79% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 39% of the time.
When facing teams that are more proficient at draining the mid-range shot, Portland State often performs worse than normal. Portland State is more efficient than usual 33% of the time when facing teams that have an offensive mid-range field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 34.32%. In their other contests, Portland State performs better than the norm 72% of the time.
