ANALYSIS: They're far from the worst of the worst, but Oakland should not be a terribly frightening opponent for most clubs. They have a record of 12-18 and are ranked 257th overall (out of 357) in the latest Haslametrics ratings. Of the 12 schools in the Horizon League (average ranking 232.0), they're currently ranked as our #7 team in the conference.
Oakland will certainly not be one of the stingier defenses opponents will encounter. Allowing more than 107 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked down at #312 in defensive efficiency. Oakland gives up far too many offensive rebounds and second chances to their opponents. The club has a rating of 16.75 vs. AO in potential points allowed off of second chances (tenth from the bottom nationally), and they let AO convert a healthy 7.0% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked 341st) as well. Oakland also allows the opposition to get off far too many shots from the floor. The team is ranked 338th in the nation in defensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of 86.90 vs. AO. Oakland has lastly done a pretty poor job this season to prevent opponents from making shots from the inside. The team is ranked 332nd in the country in defensive near-proximity percentage, allowing AO to make good on 65.2% of their attempts from close-up. If Oakland does have a bright spot on defense, it would have to be their success preventing opponents from getting to the free throw line. The team has a defensive free throw attempt rate of 18.72 vs. AO, which ranks ninth-best in the country.
Even though the team ranks considerably higher in offensive efficiency, Oakland isn't a powerhouse on that end of the floor either. Scoring roughly 99 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #187 in the nation in offensive efficiency. Oakland is one of the more deficient teams in the nation as it pertains to scoring off of offensive rebounds. Against AO, the team converts only 3.3% of all second-chance opportunities (324th nationally). If Oakland does have a strength offensively, it would have to be the team's ability to get to the free throw line. The squad has a free throw attempt rate of 28.43 vs. AO, which ranks 41st in the country.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
