ANALYSIS: If you're looking for a squad in the bottom quartile of all Division I basketball teams this year, CSU Northridge likely fits the bill. Their record this season is 11-19, and the club is ranked 280th overall (out of 351) in Haslametrics' most recent ratings. Of the nine schools in the Big West (average ranking 256.1), they're currently ranked as our #6 team in the conference.
CSU Northridge has a very sieve-like defense that gives up points way too easily. The team is ranked 332nd in efficiency on that end of the court and gives up more than 112 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. CSU Northridge does an extremely poor job to deny the opposition behind the arc. They rank sixth from the bottom nationally in defensive three-point percentage, allowing AO to make 40.6% of their attempts from afar. Luckily, AO will take nowhere near as many threes as they typically would, and only 32.1% of AO's field goal attempts will come from downtown. CSU Northridge also allows opponents' field goal percentages to get far too high. The ball-club ranks #317 nationally in field goal percentage allowed, as AO will convert approximately 48.0% of their total attempts from the floor.
Even though the team ranks considerably higher in offensive efficiency, CSU Northridge isn't a powerhouse on that end of the floor either. Scoring roughly 100 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #188 in the nation in offensive efficiency. CSU Northridge happens to be one of the very worst in the game when it comes to maximizing the number of shot attempts they get off from the floor. The team is nationally ranked 334th in offensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of only 77.72 vs. AO. If CSU Northridge does have a strength offensively, it would have to be the team's ability to get to the free throw line. The squad has a free throw attempt rate of 32.03 vs. AO, which ranks 30th in the country.
CSU Northridge has recently performed below their norm from an efficiency standpoint. The team is currently ranked 314th in the country in positive momentum.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
CSU Northridge is typically better vs. teams that tend to get off more shots. Against foes that have an offensive field goal attempt rate vs. AO greater than 79.45, CSU Northridge performs above their norm 72% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 20% of the time.
When facing teams that convert more frequently off of offensive rebounds, CSU Northridge often performs better than normal. CSU Northridge is more efficient than usual 79% of the time when facing teams that have an offensive second-chance conversion percentage vs. AO greater than 6.25%. In their other contests, CSU Northridge performs better than the norm 29% of the time.
CSU Northridge does better vs. clubs that effectively clean the offensive glass. When playing squads that have an offensive second-chance potential point rate vs. AO greater than 13.16, CSU Northridge performs above average 71% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 27% of the time.
