ANALYSIS:
While not an atrocious team by any means, Northern Iowa is not exactly one that should appear in many top-100 rankings either. Ranked 184th overall (out of 353) in our most recent ratings, they presently have a record of 16-18. Of the 10 schools in the MVC (average ranking 178.4), they're currently ranked as our #5 team in the conference.

If there is a strength for Northern Iowa this year, it's probably on the defensive end of the court. The team is rated 147th in defensive efficiency, allowing fewer than 103 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO. Northern Iowa does a super job to deny opponents offensive rebounds and second chances. They have a rating of 11.19 vs. AO in potential points allowed off of second chances (ranked 24th in the country), and they allow AO to convert just 4.6% of their second-chance opportunities (ranked 39th) as well. If Northern Iowa does exhibit a noticeable weakness on the defensive end of the floor, it'd likely be the team's unwillingness to take risks in order to score fast points off of the opposition's turnovers. The squad only has a rating of 7.79 in potential points scored off of steals vs. AO, which ranks 15th-worst in the college game.

Northern Iowa doesn't perform as well offensively as they do defensively. The team is ranked 225th in offensive efficiency, scoring about 100 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Northern Iowa poses no threat whatsoever to grab rebounds off their own misses. Against AO, the ball-club has a rating of 9.40 in potential points scored off of second chances (sixth from the bottom nationally), and they convert just 4.1% of their second-chance opportunities (ranked 338th) as well. If Northern Iowa does have a strength offensively, it would have to be the team's outstanding shooting at the charity stripe. The squad makes 75.3% of their free throw attempts, which ranks #42 in Division I.
SORTABLE SCHEDULE / RESULTS:
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location.
Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Northern Iowa performs better against squads that have trouble defending the mid-range shot. When facing teams that have a defensive mid-range field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 36.53%, Northern Iowa is more efficient than normal 77% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 37% of the time.
When playing teams that are more proficient at draining the mid-range shot, Northern Iowa usually performs better than average. Northern Iowa is more efficient than normal 73% of the time when facing clubs that have an offensive mid-range field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 36.09%. In all other contests, Northern Iowa performs better than average 35% of the time.
Northern Iowa is typically worse vs. teams that favor a faster tempo. Against foes that have a pace vs. AO greater than 68.21, Northern Iowa performs above their norm 33% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 71% of the time.
