Northern Iowa showcases one of the country's most efficient offenses. Racking up about 113 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO and promoting an extremely deliberate pace (the fifth-slowest in D1), the team is nationally rated 17th in efficiency on that end of the floor. Northern Iowa is a very dangerous team when it comes to shooting the rock, ranking in the top-25 in three of our four major field goal categories. They can be considered sharpshooters out on the perimeter, converting 39.5% of their three-pointers (13th in the nation), 40.2% of their mid-range chances (16th), and 48.0% of their total shots from the field (17th) vs. AO. Northern Iowa also does a really good job converting from the free throw line. Making 74.6% of their attempts from the stripe, they are ranked 32nd nationally in free throw percentage. Moreover, they get ample opportunity to beat you from the line, as the ball-club falls in the top-100 in free throw attempt rate with a rating of 30.78 vs. AO. If Northern Iowa does have a glaring weakness offensively, it would have to be the team's difficulties obtaining second-chance opportunities from offensive rebounds. The squad only has a rating of 10.03 vs. AO in potential points off of second chances, which ranks fourth-worst in college hoops.
Northern Iowa plays at roughly the same level defensively as they do offensively. The team ranks 42nd nationally in defensive efficiency, allowing about 93 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Northern Iowa is a superior unit when it comes to preventing opponents from getting to the foul line. With a defensive free throw attempt rate of 21.98 vs. AO, they are currently rated ninth in the country in that category. Northern Iowa also does a fantastic job to prevent opposing teams from capitalizing on chances from offensive rebounds. The squad allows AO to convert only 4.7% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked 15th in the NCAA), and with a rating of 13.32, they're 43rd in potential points allowed off of the offensive glass as well.
