ANALYSIS: This website places Memphis in the top 25% of all NCAA college basketball teams this year. They are ranked #55 (out of 353) in the most recent Haslametrics ratings and have a record of 21-10. They are also ranked by this site as the #4 team (out of 12) in the AAC (average ranking 94.6).
Memphis has been magnificent on the defensive end of the court. The team is rated seventh in defensive efficiency and allows fewer than 87 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Memphis will put a good dent in the shooting percentages of several opponents, considering the team ranks in the top-50 in each of the four major defensive shooting categories. While their best work on defense is done near the bucket (allowing 46.3% shooting from near-proximity locations vs. AO, best in the nation), the team also pesters AO into converting just 29.7% of their three-pointers (15th), 33.7% of their mid-range field goals (47th), and 36.6% of their total shots from the field (second). Memphis is also one of the better teams when it comes to not allowing opponents to convert scoring chances off of offensive rebounds. The squad allows AO to convert only 3.8% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked 42nd in the NCAA).
Unfortunately, Memphis is not even remotely close to being as good on offense as they are on defense. The team is ranked 183rd in offensive efficiency, scoring about 99 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Memphis is downright rotten when shooting the mid-range jumper. The team is ranked 340th in field goal percentage from that distance, making only 31.7% of their mid-range attempts vs. AO. If Memphis does have a strength offensively, it would have to be the team's ability to obtain and convert second-chance opportunities from offensive rebounds. The squad has a second-chance conversion percentage of 7.7% vs. AO, which ranks 11th in the nation.
Memphis has been one of the more erratic teams in NCAA basketball this year (presently ranked 311th in the country in consistency), which makes forecasting the outcomes of their upcoming games tougher than most. On the road, Memphis performs noticeably worse than they do at home. The team is currently ranked 330th in the country in the away-from-home metric we track.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Memphis does worse vs. clubs that tend to allow more shots on the perimeter. When playing squads that have a defensive shooting proximity score vs. AO greater than 2.00, Memphis performs above average 29% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 100% of the time.
Memphis performs worse against squads that convert more frequently off of offensive rebounds. When facing teams that have an offensive second-chance conversion percentage vs. AO greater than 5.05%, Memphis is more efficient than normal 30% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 91% of the time.
When playing teams that typically allow more than a fair share of breakaway opportunities, Memphis usually performs better than average. Memphis is more efficient than normal 70% of the time when facing clubs that have a potential point rate allowed off steals vs. AO greater than 10.69. In all other contests, Memphis performs better than average 18% of the time.
