ANALYSIS: Memphis is a fairly decent basketball team that, while likely better than average, isn't quite good enough to crack any top-25 rankings this year. Their record this season is 21-13, and the club is ranked 151st overall (out of 351) in Haslametrics' most recent ratings. Of the 12 schools in the AAC (average ranking 128.8), they're currently ranked as our #8 team in the conference.
If there is a strength for Memphis this year, it's probably on the offensive end of the court. The team is rated 118th in offensive efficiency, scoring more than 104 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Memphis does a super job in their efforts to get to the free throw line. With a free throw attempt rate of 33.50 vs. AO, they are ranked third in the nation at getting to the charity stripe. Unfortunately, they don't convert a ton of their free throws and make just 68.6% of their attempts. Memphis will also make a strong effort to get off as many field goals close to the basket as they can. The ball-club is 27th in the NCAA in ratio of near-proximity attempts to total field goal attempts. If you do allow them to get to the inside, they are undoubtedly capable of making you pay. Presently rated in the top-100 in near-proximity shooting percentage, they make roughly 61.8% of their attempts from short-distance vs. AO. If Memphis does have a glaring weakness offensively, it would have to be the team's penchant for allowing too many easy buckets off of giveaways. The squad has a rating of 14.88 vs. AO in potential points allowed off of steals, which ranks second-worst in the college game.
Memphis doesn't perform as well defensively as they do offensively. The team is ranked 189th in defensive efficiency, allowing about 104 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Memphis gives up far too many offensive rebounds and second chances to their opponents. The club has a rating of 17.98 vs. AO in potential points allowed off of second chances (340th nationally). If Memphis does have a bright spot on defense, it would have to be their ability to prevent opponents from draining shot attempts in between the three-point line and the low post. AO will convert just 32.8% of their mid-range field goal attempts, and the team is nationally ranked 18th-best in that category as a result.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When facing teams that allow a higher number of conversions off of the offensive glass, Memphis often performs better than normal. Memphis is more efficient than usual 80% of the time when facing teams that have a defensive second-chance conversion percentage vs. AO greater than 7.36%. In their other contests, Memphis performs better than the norm 33% of the time.
Memphis does worse vs. clubs that convert more frequently off of offensive rebounds. When playing squads that have an offensive second-chance conversion percentage vs. AO greater than 7.26%, Memphis performs above average 23% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 62% of the time.
Memphis performs worse against squads that shoot the ball well from the field. When facing teams that have an offensive field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 45.85%, Memphis is more efficient than normal 20% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 58% of the time.
