ANALYSIS: They may not cause sleepless nights for opponents, but UNLV, as a slightly above-average team, cannot be totally ignored. Ranked 114th overall (out of 351) in our most recent ratings, they presently have a record of 18-15. They are also ranked by this site as the #5 team (out of 11) in the MWC (average ranking 148.0).
Based on their performances this year, UNLV will likely find more success on defense than they will on offense. Allowing about 98 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO, they currently occupy the #105 slot in the ratings for defensive efficiency. UNLV does tremendous work shutting down the opposition from the inside. They are ranked fourth in the country in defensive near-proximity percentage, allowing AO to make good on only 49.5% of their attempts from close-up. UNLV is also one of the better teams when it comes to not allowing opponents to convert scoring chances off of offensive rebounds. The squad allows AO to convert only 5.0% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked 27th in the NCAA). If UNLV does exhibit a noticeable weakness on the defensive end of the floor, it'd likely be the team's propensity to allow too many shot attempts per trip. The squad has a rating of 88.71 in defensive field goal attempt rate vs. AO, which ranks sixth-worst in college basketball.
UNLV plays at about the same level on offense as they do on defense. The team ranks 110th nationally in offensive efficiency, scoring about 103 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. UNLV has been generally quite good when shooting the three-pointer. They're ranked 66th nationally in three-point field goal percentage and make about 36.8% of their attempts from there vs. AO. UNLV has also been fairly successful when shooting from the field. The squad is ranked 69th in the country in field goal percentage, making approximately 45.3% of their attempts vs. AO. If UNLV does have a glaring weakness offensively, it would have to be the team's poor shooting at the line. The squad makes just 62.9% of their free throw attempts, which ranks 16th-worst in Division I.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When facing teams that convert well from outside the arc, UNLV often performs worse than normal. UNLV is more efficient than usual 27% of the time when facing teams that have an offensive three-point field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 35.52%. In their other contests, UNLV performs better than the norm 67% of the time.
UNLV does better vs. clubs that convert more frequently off of offensive rebounds. When playing squads that have an offensive second-chance conversion percentage vs. AO greater than 8.01%, UNLV performs above average 80% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 41% of the time.
UNLV performs worse against squads that shoot the ball well from the field. When facing teams that have an offensive field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 43.19%, UNLV is more efficient than normal 35% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 73% of the time.
