ANALYSIS:
Cal Poly presently has one of the below-average teams in college basketball. They have a record of 4-20 and are ranked 324th overall (out of 357) in the latest Haslametrics ratings. Of the 11 schools in the Big West (average ranking 193.6), they're currently ranked as the worst team in the conference.

Cal Poly has one of the most anemic offenses around. They rank 340th in efficiency on that end of the court and score fewer than 88 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Cal Poly does a terrible job to take advantage of scoring chances off of offensive rebounds. Against AO, the team converts only 2.7% of all second-chance opportunities (seventh from the bottom nationally), and with a rating of 8.74, they're 345th in potential points scored off of the offensive boards as well. Cal Poly also does an extremely poor job drawing fouls and getting to the free throw line. With a free throw attempt rate of just 19.44 vs. AO, they are 346th in the overall rankings for that category.

Though they rate better on defense than they do on offense, Cal Poly still isn't one of the more capable defensive teams in college hoops. Allowing roughly 104 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #267 in the nation in defensive efficiency. Cal Poly commits too many fouls, which leads to plentiful free throw attempts for the opposition. With a defensive free throw attempt rate of 28.77 vs. AO, the squad is ranked #312 in the country in that category. Cal Poly also tends to struggle a bit against teams that shoot the three. They rank 307th nationally in defensive three-point percentage, allowing AO to make 36.5% of their attempts from afar.

Cal Poly has been playing much better basketball as of late and is presently ranked seventh in positive momentum because of it. On the road, Cal Poly performs somewhat better than their norm, as the squad is nationally ranked 36th in our away-from-home metric.
SORTABLE SCHEDULE / RESULTS:
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location.
Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Cal Poly does better vs. clubs that find ways to get to the free throw line. When playing squads that have an offensive free throw attempt rate vs. AO greater than 22.80, Cal Poly performs above average 75% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 18% of the time.
Cal Poly performs worse against squads that prefer the outside shot. When facing teams that have an offensive shooting proximity score vs. AO greater than 2.02, Cal Poly is more efficient than normal 13% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 67% of the time.
When playing teams that are likely to allow more second chances off of offensive rebounds, Cal Poly usually performs better than average. Cal Poly is more efficient than normal 67% of the time when facing clubs that have a defensive second-chance potential point rate vs. AO greater than 11.56. In all other contests, Cal Poly performs better than average 13% of the time.
