ANALYSIS: They're far from the worst of the worst, but Charlotte should not be a terribly frightening opponent for most clubs. Their record this season is 9-16, and the club is ranked 252nd overall (out of 357) in Haslametrics' most recent ratings. They are also ranked by this site as the #11 team (out of 14) in Conference USA (average ranking 168.8).
Charlotte is not one of the better offensive teams you will find. They are rated #289 in efficiency on that end of the court and only score about 93 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO. Charlotte happens to be one of the very worst in the game when it comes to maximizing the number of shot attempts they get off from the floor. The team is nationally ranked 347th in offensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of only 76.91 vs. AO.
Though they rate better on defense than they do on offense, Charlotte still isn't one of the more capable defensive teams in college hoops. Allowing roughly 102 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #209 in the nation in defensive efficiency. Charlotte does not stand out in a positive manner when they're asked to defend in the paint. The team is ranked 299th in the country in defensive near-proximity percentage, allowing AO to make good on 62.9% of their attempts from close-up. If Charlotte does have a bright spot on defense, it would have to be their success preventing opponents from getting to the free throw line. The team has a defensive free throw attempt rate of 20.57 vs. AO, which ranks 39th-best in the country.
Charlotte has recently performed below their norm from an efficiency standpoint. The team is currently ranked 325th in the country in positive momentum. Charlotte has also been one of the more erratic teams in NCAA basketball this year (presently ranked 332nd in the country in consistency), which makes forecasting the outcomes of their upcoming games tougher than most.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Charlotte does better vs. clubs that convert well from outside the arc. When playing squads that have an offensive three-point field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 33.00%, Charlotte performs above average 100% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 31% of the time.
Charlotte performs better against squads that convert more frequently off of offensive rebounds. When facing teams that have an offensive second-chance conversion percentage vs. AO greater than 4.56%, Charlotte is more efficient than normal 83% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 25% of the time.
When playing teams that allow more chances at the line, Charlotte usually performs worse than average. Charlotte is more efficient than normal 33% of the time when facing clubs that have a defensive free throw attempt rate vs. AO greater than 23.29. In all other contests, Charlotte performs better than average 89% of the time.
