ANALYSIS: Mid Tennessee is not one of the better teams in Division I this year. Their record this season is 5-18, and the club is ranked 304th overall (out of 357) in Haslametrics' most recent ratings. They are also ranked by this site as the worst team (out of 14) in Conference USA (average ranking 168.8).
Mid Tennessee is not one of the most productive teams on offense. Scoring fewer than 90 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are rated at #329 in offensive efficiency. Mid Tennessee is downright rotten when shooting the mid-range jumper. The team is ranked 347th in field goal percentage from that distance, making only 31.2% of their mid-range attempts vs. AO. Exacerbating the situation, they find themselves in the bottom-25 in overall offensive field goal percentage, converting only 38.9% of all their attempts from the floor vs. AO.
Even though the team ranks considerably higher in defensive efficiency, Mid Tennessee isn't a powerhouse on that end of the floor either. Allowing roughly 102 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #215 in the nation in defensive efficiency. Mid Tennessee fares terribly when attempting to stop opponents from converting from the inside. The team is ranked seventh from the bottom in the country in defensive near-proximity percentage, allowing AO to make good on 66.9% of their attempts from close-up. And with such little resistance, AO will merrily cut, slash, and drive right to the hoop as often as possible. Of AO's total field goals, a big portion of them (39.6%) will be from short-distance. Mid Tennessee also allows opponents' field goal percentages to get far too high. The ball-club ranks #326 nationally in field goal percentage allowed, as AO will convert approximately 47.5% of their total attempts from the floor. If Mid Tennessee does have a bright spot on defense, it would have to be their success stopping opponents from earning second-chance opportunities via offensive boards. The team has a rating of 9.72 in potential points allowed off of second chances vs. AO, which ranks tenth-best in college hoops.
Mid Tennessee has been one of the more erratic teams in NCAA basketball this year (presently ranked 326th in the country in consistency), which makes forecasting the outcomes of their upcoming games tougher than most.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Mid Tennessee does better vs. clubs that fail to defend efficiently inside the paint. When playing squads that have a defensive near-proximity field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 58.33%, Mid Tennessee performs above average 80% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 42% of the time.
Hot shooting lifts Middle Tennessee past Charlotte 73-60 (2/6/2021 7:27:26 PM) MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (AP) — Jordan Davis scored 17 points, Elias King and Tyler Millin added career-highs with 15 and 13 points, respectively, and Middle Tennessee beat Charlotte 73-60 on Saturday.
