ANALYSIS: Mid Tennessee is a fairly decent basketball team that, while likely better than average, isn't quite good enough to crack any top-25 rankings this year. They are ranked #170 (out of 351) in the most recent Haslametrics ratings and have a record of 19-17. Of the 14 schools in Conference USA (average ranking 186.1), they're currently ranked as our #7 team in the conference.
If there is a strength for Mid Tennessee this year, it's probably on the defensive end of the court. The team is rated 124th in defensive efficiency, allowing fewer than 99 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO. Mid Tennessee does a super job to deny opponents offensive rebounds and second chances. They have a rating of 11.37 vs. AO in potential points allowed off of second chances (ranked fourth in the country). Mid Tennessee also has extremely pesky defenders that ceaselessly attempt to deny opponents ample opportunity to shoot. The club is ranked 14th in Division I in defensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of 76.60 vs. AO. If Mid Tennessee does exhibit a noticeable weakness on the defensive end of the floor, it'd likely be the team's unwillingness to take risks in order to score fast points off of the opposition's turnovers. The squad only has a rating of 8.18 in potential points scored off of steals vs. AO, which ranks 22nd-worst in the college game.
The offense for Mid Tennessee, on the other hand, isn't nearly as efficient as the defense is. The team is ranked 225th in offensive efficiency, scoring about 97 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Mid Tennessee needs improvement when it comes to draining the mid-range shot. The team is ranked 322nd in field goal percentage from that distance, making only 31.0% of their mid-range attempts vs. AO.
When playing on the road, Mid Tennessee performs somewhat worse than they normally do on their home court. The club is nationally ranked 302nd in our site's away-from-home metric.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Mid Tennessee performs worse against squads that are more proficient at draining the mid-range shot. When facing teams that have an offensive mid-range field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 35.15%, Mid Tennessee is more efficient than normal 32% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 75% of the time.
When playing teams that tend to get off more shots, Mid Tennessee usually performs better than average. Mid Tennessee is more efficient than normal 65% of the time when facing clubs that have an offensive field goal attempt rate vs. AO greater than 80.82. In all other contests, Mid Tennessee performs better than average 25% of the time.
Mid Tennessee is typically worse vs. teams that find ways to get to the free throw line. Against foes that have an offensive free throw attempt rate vs. AO greater than 29.45, Mid Tennessee performs above their norm 27% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 63% of the time.
