ANALYSIS: Miami has a fairly solid squad that likely falls within the top quartile of all teams in college basketball this year. Ranked 45th overall (out of 351) in our most recent ratings, they presently have a record of 22-10. Of the 15 schools in the ACC (average ranking 55.7), they're currently ranked as our #9 team in the conference.
Miami will mainly try to find success through their defense. They are ranked 39th in defensive efficiency and allow fewer than 95 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Miami has done a very good job to prevent opponents from draining threes this year. They rank 41st in the NCAA in defensive three-point percentage, allowing AO to make just 32.6% of their attempts from afar. Miami also does a pretty solid job avoiding careless fouls and minimizing opponents' opportunities from the free throw line. With a defensive free throw attempt rate of 22.33 vs. AO, they are currently rated 44th in the country in that category.
Miami plays at about the same level on offense as they do on defense. The team ranks 63rd nationally in offensive efficiency, scoring about 109 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Miami has the potential to make you pay if you let them get close to the rim. The team is ranked 28th in the country in near-proximity field goal percentage, making approximately 66.1% of their attempts from up-close vs. AO. The squad likewise lands in the top-50 in overall offensive field goal percentage and makes good on about 47.6% of their total attempts vs. AO. Miami is also one of the better teams in the country when it comes to converting scoring chances off of offensive rebounds. Against AO, the team successfully converts 8.9% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked 35th nationally). If Miami does have a weakness offensively, it would have to be the team's poor shooting at the line. The squad makes just 67.9% of their free throw attempts, which ranks 49th-worst in Division I.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Miami is typically better vs. teams that allow opponents to shoot well from the field. Against foes that have a defensive field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 43.58%, Miami performs above their norm 80% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 27% of the time.
When facing teams that allow more chances at the line, Miami often performs better than normal. Miami is more efficient than usual 73% of the time when facing teams that have a defensive free throw attempt rate vs. AO greater than 25.54. In their other contests, Miami performs better than the norm 29% of the time.
Miami does worse vs. clubs that do a nice job converting inside the paint. When playing squads that have an offensive near-proximity field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 61.11%, Miami performs above average 29% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 73% of the time.
