ANALYSIS: As one of the worst teams in NCAA basketball, UMES should be a pushover for the average-to-good squads in Division I. Carrying a record of 9-20, they are currently rated #353 overall (out of 362) in All-Play Percentage this season. They are also ranked by this site as the #7 team (out of eight) in the MEAC (average ranking 308.3).
UMES has one of the most anemic offenses around. They rank fifth from the bottom in efficiency on that end of the court and score fewer than 89 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. UMES is downright awful shooting the basketball and can't hit from anywhere, shamefully ranking in the bottom-25 in each of the four major field goal shooting categories. They make just 28.1% of their three-pointers (ranking third from the bottom nationally), 34.1% of their mid-range attempts (338th), 49.8% of their near-proximity chances (ninth from the bottom), and 37.4% of their total shots from the field (third from the bottom) vs. AO.
Though they rate better on defense than they do on offense, UMES still isn't one of the more capable defensive teams in college hoops. Allowing roughly 109 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #264 in the nation in defensive efficiency. UMES has done a pretty poor job this season to prevent opponents from making shots from the inside. The team is ranked 323rd in the country in defensive near-proximity percentage, allowing AO to make good on 62.2% of their attempts from close-up. UMES has also done a lackluster job this year when defending the mid-range shot. The squad is ranked 323rd nationally in defensive mid-range field goal percentage, allowing AO to make good on 42.5% of their attempts from those in-between spots on the floor.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When playing teams that do not defend well on the perimeter, UMES usually performs better than average. UMES is more efficient than normal 83% of the time when facing clubs that have a defensive three-point field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 35.21%. In all other contests, UMES performs better than average 31% of the time.
UMES is typically better vs. teams that allow a higher number of conversions off of the offensive glass. Against foes that have a defensive second-chance conversion percentage vs. AO greater than 6.24%, UMES performs above their norm 82% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 36% of the time.
When facing teams that tend to get off more shots, UMES often performs worse than normal. UMES is more efficient than usual 33% of the time when facing teams that have an offensive field goal attempt rate vs. AO greater than 84.62. In their other contests, UMES performs better than the norm 77% of the time.
