ANALYSIS: Despite having a win percentage north of .500, UMES is definitely a below-average ball-club in college hoops this year. They have a record of 18-13 and are ranked 292nd overall (out of 363) in the latest Haslametrics ratings. Of the eight schools in the MEAC (average ranking 290.6), they're currently ranked as our #4 team in the conference.
Based on their performances this year, UMES will likely find more success on defense than they will on offense. Allowing about 102 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO, they currently occupy the #147 slot in the ratings for defensive efficiency. UMES thrives on scoring fast and easy points off of steals. They're ranked ninth in potential points off of breakaway steals vs. AO with a rating of 16.03. UMES also does a really good job to prevent opponents from getting off shots from the field. The club is ranked 47th in Division I in defensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of 80.92 vs. AO. If UMES does exhibit a noticeable weakness on the defensive end of the floor, it'd likely be the team's difficulties stopping opponents from obtaining second-chance opportunities via offensive rebounds. The squad has a rating of 16.98 in potential points allowed off of second chances vs. AO, which ranks 22nd-worst in college hoops.
Unfortunately, UMES is not even remotely close to being as good on offense as they are on defense. The team is ranked 350th in offensive efficiency, scoring about 91 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. UMES will have a really tough time winning games when taking into consideration their shooting percentage near the basket. The team is ranked 340th in near-proximity field goal percentage, making only 52.7% of their attempts from up-close vs. AO. Moreover, they find themselves in the bottom-50 in overall offensive field goal percentage, converting just 40.4% of their total attempts vs. AO. UMES is also one of the more inferior teams in the college game when it comes to maximizing opportunities to score on offense. The team is nationally ranked 332nd in offensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of only 81.02 vs. AO.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
UMES performs better against squads that favor a faster tempo. When facing teams that have a pace vs. AO greater than 69.66, UMES is more efficient than normal 88% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 21% of the time.
When playing teams that allow a higher number of conversions off of the offensive glass, UMES usually performs better than average. UMES is more efficient than normal 88% of the time when facing clubs that have a defensive second-chance conversion percentage vs. AO greater than 5.80%. In all other contests, UMES performs better than average 21% of the time.
UMES is typically worse vs. teams that are typically efficient on offense. Against foes that have an offensive efficiency rating vs. AO greater than 99.17, UMES performs above their norm 15% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 64% of the time.
