ANALYSIS: As one of the worst teams in NCAA basketball, UMES should be a pushover for the average-to-good squads in Division I. Carrying a record of 5-27, they are currently rated #350 overall (out of 353) in All-Play Percentage this season. They are also ranked by this site as the worst team (out of 11) in the MEAC (average ranking 316.7).
UMES has one of the most anemic offenses around. They rank third from the bottom in efficiency on that end of the court and score fewer than 79 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. UMES is downright awful shooting the basketball and can't hit from anywhere, shamefully ranking in the bottom-25 in each of the four major field goal shooting categories. They make just 24.3% of their three-pointers (ranking last nationally), 31.6% of their mid-range attempts (343rd), 50.4% of their near-proximity chances (ninth from the bottom), and 35.5% of their total shots from the field (second from the bottom) vs. AO. UMES also has had serious struggles making their free throws this year. Converting just 62.2% of their attempts, the squad is ranked #347 overall in free throw percentage. UMES lastly does an extremely poor job drawing fouls and getting to the free throw line. With a free throw attempt rate of just 19.46 vs. AO, they are eighth from the bottom in the overall rankings for that category.
UMES doesn't rate much better on defense than they do on offense. Allowing roughly 106 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #310 in the nation in defensive efficiency. UMES allows opponents to make good on a fair number of their overall field goal attempts. The ball-club ranks #295 nationally in field goal percentage allowed, as AO will convert approximately 45.9% of their total attempts from the floor.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When playing teams that favor a faster tempo, UMES usually performs better than average. UMES is more efficient than normal 78% of the time when facing clubs that have a pace vs. AO greater than 69.38. In all other contests, UMES performs better than average 31% of the time.
UMES is typically better vs. teams that are likely to allow more second chances off of offensive rebounds. Against foes that have a defensive second-chance potential point rate vs. AO greater than 13.40, UMES performs above their norm 79% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 41% of the time.
When facing teams that aren't terribly skilled defensively, UMES often performs better than normal. UMES is more efficient than usual 75% of the time when facing teams that have a defensive efficiency rating vs. AO greater than 102.26. In their other contests, UMES performs better than the norm 40% of the time.
