ANALYSIS: While not an atrocious team by any means, UMES is not exactly one that should appear in many top-100 rankings either. Ranked 233rd overall (out of 351) in our most recent ratings, they presently have a record of 18-15. Of the 13 schools in the MEAC (average ranking 284.1), they're currently ranked as our #3 team in the conference.
Offensively, UMES finds itself in the lower half of the rankings. The team is rated 231st in offensive efficiency and scores fewer than 98 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO. UMES happens to be one of the very worst in the game when it comes to maximizing the number of shot attempts they get off from the floor. The team is nationally ranked 333rd in offensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of only 76.85 vs. AO. UMES also has some difficulty protecting the ball efficiently when in possession, which leads to some quick and easy baskets for the opposition. The team's rating for potential breakaway points allowed off of steals vs. AO is 13.89, which ranks 325th in D1.
UMES doesn't rate much better on defense than they do on offense. Allowing roughly 104 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #226 in the nation in defensive efficiency. UMES has done a pretty poor job this season to prevent opponents from making shots from the inside. The team is ranked 325th in the country in defensive near-proximity percentage, allowing AO to make good on 64.8% of their attempts from close-up. If UMES does have a bright spot on defense, it would have to be their ability to limit the number of shot attempts by the opposition. The team has a defensive field goal attempt rate of 78.44 vs. AO, which ranks 48th-best in college basketball.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
UMES is typically worse vs. teams that allow more chances at the line. Against foes that have a defensive free throw attempt rate vs. AO greater than 29.11, UMES performs above their norm 30% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 69% of the time.
When facing teams that prefer the outside shot, UMES often performs worse than normal. UMES is more efficient than usual 33% of the time when facing teams that have an offensive shooting proximity score vs. AO greater than 1.97. In their other contests, UMES performs better than the norm 67% of the time.
UMES does better vs. clubs that allow a higher number of conversions off of the offensive glass. When playing squads that have a defensive second-chance conversion percentage vs. AO greater than 7.62%, UMES performs above average 67% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 33% of the time.
