ANALYSIS: Despite having a win percentage north of .500, Marist is definitely a below-average ball-club in college hoops this year. They are ranked #278 (out of 357) in the most recent Haslametrics ratings and have a record of 12-9. Of the 11 schools in the MAAC (average ranking 258.6), they're currently ranked as our #8 team in the conference. With a strength-of-schedule rating of 0.267 (which ranks 338th nationally), Marist has had one of the cushiest slates in all of college basketball.
Marist is not one of the most productive teams on offense. Scoring fewer than 91 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are rated at #316 in offensive efficiency. Marist does a fairly poor job cleaning the offensive glass. Against AO, the ball-club has a rating of 9.56 in potential points scored off of second chances (325th nationally), and they convert just 3.4% of their second-chance opportunities (ranked 319th) as well. Marist also struggles to draw fouls and earn opportunities at the free throw line. With a free throw attempt rate of just 20.70 vs. AO, they are 324th in the overall rankings for that category. If Marist does have a strength offensively, it would have to be the team's ability to successfully hit from mid-range locations on the court. The team makes 42.3% of their in-between field goal attempts vs. AO, which ranks 43rd in the NCAA.
Even though the team ranks considerably higher in defensive efficiency, Marist isn't a powerhouse on that end of the floor either. Allowing roughly 100 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #181 in the nation in defensive efficiency. Marist has done a lackluster job this year when defending the mid-range shot. The squad is ranked 332nd nationally in defensive mid-range field goal percentage, allowing AO to make good on 44.1% of their attempts from those in-between spots on the floor. If Marist does have a bright spot on defense, it would have to be their success stopping opponents from converting from locations near the basket. AO will convert just 53.1% of their near-proximity field goal attempts, and the team ranks 23rd-best in the country in that category as a result.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Marist does worse vs. clubs that are typically efficient on offense. When playing squads that have an offensive efficiency rating vs. AO greater than 94.73, Marist performs above average 22% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 83% of the time.
Marist performs worse against squads that convert well from the charity stripe. When facing teams that have an adjusted free throw percentage vs. AO greater than 0.69%, Marist is more efficient than normal 22% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 83% of the time.
When playing teams that shoot the ball well from the field, Marist usually performs worse than average. Marist is more efficient than normal 39% of the time when facing clubs that have an offensive field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 39.91%. In all other contests, Marist performs better than average 88% of the time.
