ANALYSIS: A top-25 caliber team, Loyola-Chicago will almost certainly present a challenging task for any Division I opponent. Carrying a record of 25-8, they are currently rated #22 overall (out of 358) in All-Play Percentage this season. Of the 10 schools in the MVC (average ranking 128.3), they're currently ranked as the best team in the conference.
Loyola-Chicago is one of the most menacing defensive teams in the country. Ranked 22nd in defensive efficiency, they will allow fewer than 91 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Loyola-Chicago does a super job to deny opponents offensive rebounds and second chances. They have a rating of 10.23 vs. AO in potential points allowed off of second chances (ranked 24th in the country). Loyola-Chicago will also take a bite out of many opponents' shooting percentages, based on the fact that the team ranks in the top-50 in three of our four primary defensive field goal categories. They'll inflict the most harm on the outside, allowing AO to convert just 30.5% of their three-pointers (30th in the nation), 34.3% of their mid-range chances (49th), and 40.2% of their total shots from the field (42nd).
Loyola-Chicago plays at about the same level on offense as they do on defense. The team ranks 50th nationally in offensive efficiency, scoring about 108 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Loyola-Chicago will routinely look to penetrate, pound the ball inside, and score from as short a distance as possible. The ball-club is 23rd in the NCAA in ratio of near-proximity attempts to total field goal attempts. If you do allow them to get to the inside, they are undoubtedly capable of making you pay. Presently rated in the top-75 in near-proximity shooting percentage, they make roughly 62.6% of their attempts from short-distance vs. AO. Loyola-Chicago also boasts one of the better offensive field goal percentages in the college game. The squad is ranked 26th in the country in field goal percentage, making approximately 47.4% of their attempts vs. AO.
Loyola-Chicago has been one of the most erratic teams in college basketball this year (currently ranked third from the bottom overall in consistency), which makes the outcomes of their future games far more difficult to predict.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Loyola-Chicago performs better against squads that prefer the outside shot. When facing teams that have an offensive shooting proximity score vs. AO greater than 2.05, Loyola-Chicago is more efficient than normal 55% of the time. In their other contests, the team is never more efficient than the norm.
When playing teams that tend to get off more shots, Loyola-Chicago usually performs worse than average. Loyola-Chicago is more efficient than normal 24% of the time when facing clubs that have an offensive field goal attempt rate vs. AO greater than 81.79. In all other contests, Loyola-Chicago performs better than average 64% of the time.
Loyola-Chicago is typically better vs. teams that fail to defend efficiently inside the paint. Against foes that have a defensive near-proximity field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 59.61%, Loyola-Chicago performs above their norm 64% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 24% of the time.
