ANALYSIS: Loyola-Chicago has been extremely effective at times this year and should be regarded as a serious opponent. Carrying a record of 32-6, they are currently rated #50 overall (out of 351) in All-Play Percentage this season. Of the 10 schools in the MVC (average ranking 135.8), they're currently ranked as the best team in the conference.
Loyola-Chicago will mainly try to find success through their defense. They are ranked 46th in defensive efficiency and allow fewer than 96 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Loyola-Chicago does an outstanding job shutting down the opposition from behind the arc. They rank 20th in the NCAA in defensive three-point percentage, allowing AO to make just 31.6% of their attempts from afar. Loyola-Chicago also does a bang-up job preventing the opposition from draining jumpers in between the three-point line and the low post. They're ranked 22nd in Division I in defensive mid-range field goal percentage, allowing AO to make good on only 33.3% of their attempts from that distance. Loyola-Chicago is lastly a superior unit when it comes to preventing opponents from getting to the foul line. With a defensive free throw attempt rate of 21.00 vs. AO, they are currently rated 24th in the country in that category.
Loyola-Chicago plays at about the same level on offense as they do on defense. The team ranks 56th nationally in offensive efficiency, scoring about 109 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Loyola-Chicago is a very dangerous team when it comes to shooting the rock, ranking in the top-25 in three of our four major field goal categories. They can be considered sharpshooters out on the perimeter, converting 41.4% of their three-pointers (fourth in the nation), 42.6% of their mid-range chances (16th), and 51.2% of their total shots from the field (third) vs. AO. Loyola-Chicago will also routinely look to penetrate, pound the ball inside, and score from as short a distance as possible. The ball-club is eighth in the NCAA in ratio of near-proximity attempts to total field goal attempts. If Loyola-Chicago does have a weakness offensively, it would have to be the team's difficulties obtaining second-chance opportunities from offensive rebounds. The squad only has a rating of 10.66 vs. AO in potential points off of second chances, which ranks 28th-worst in college hoops.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
