ANALYSIS: Per this website's calculations, UMass Lowell is somewhere between an average to slightly above-average D1 ball-club. They are ranked #126 (out of 363) in the most recent Haslametrics ratings and have a record of 26-8. They are also ranked by this site as the #2 team (out of nine) in the America East (average ranking 246.3). With a strength-of-schedule rating of 0.235 (which ranks eighth from the bottom in the nation), UMass Lowell has faced some of the easiest opponents in all of college basketball.
If there is a strength for UMass Lowell this year, it's probably on the offensive end of the court. The team is rated 118th in offensive efficiency, scoring more than 105 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. UMass Lowell will routinely look to penetrate, pound the ball inside, and score from as short a distance as possible. The ball-club is 16th in the NCAA in ratio of near-proximity attempts to total field goal attempts. As far as converting those near-proximity shots goes, the team shoots 58.7% vs. AO, which falls somewhere in the middle of the pack of the rankings in that category. UMass Lowell is also one of the more accurate teams in the college game when it comes to shooting the three. They're ranked 29th nationally in three-point field goal percentage and make about 37.2% of their attempts from there vs. AO. If UMass Lowell does have a weakness offensively, it would have to be the team's inability to drain mid-range jumpers. The squad makes just 33.7% of their mid-range field goal attempts vs. AO, which ranks 26th-worst in the nation.
UMass Lowell plays at roughly the same level defensively as they do offensively. The team ranks 134th nationally in defensive efficiency, allowing about 101 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. UMass Lowell has done a really good job this year to prevent opponents from making shots from the inside. They are ranked 37th in the country in defensive near-proximity percentage, allowing AO to make good on only 54.1% of their attempts from close-up. And to capitalize on that weakness, this team will make AO shoot from the inside more than they usually would. Of AO's total field goals, a big portion of them (40.3%) will be from short-distance.
UMass Lowell has been playing better basketball in their most recent outings, as evidenced by the team's #34 ranking in positive momentum. On the road, UMass Lowell performs noticeably worse than they do at home. The team is currently ranked eighth from the bottom in the country in the away-from-home metric we track.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
