ANALYSIS: Not one of the better ball-clubs in college basketball, Longwood should be a fairly easy win for most capable opponents. Haslametrics has them ranked 317th overall (out of 353) in All-Play Percentage, and the team holds a record of 14-18. They are also ranked by this site as the #7 team (out of 11) in the Big South (average ranking 281.5). With a strength-of-schedule rating of 0.259 (which ranks second from the bottom in the nation), Longwood has faced some of the easiest opponents in all of college basketball.
Longwood has one of the most anemic offenses around. They rank 338th in efficiency on that end of the court and score fewer than 89 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Longwood shoots dreadfully from the floor and ranks in the bottom-25 in three of our four major field goal shooting categories. They are worse off shooting inside the three-point stripe, making good on just 31.7% of their mid-range jumpers (342nd in the nation), 48.2% of their near-proximity chances (third from the bottom), and 37.4% of their total shots from the field (fourth from the bottom) vs. AO. Longwood also does a terrible job to take advantage of scoring chances off of offensive rebounds. Against AO, the team converts only 3.0% of all second-chance opportunities (sixth from the bottom nationally).
Even though the team ranks considerably higher in defensive efficiency, Longwood isn't a powerhouse on that end of the floor either. Allowing roughly 102 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #216 in the nation in defensive efficiency. Longwood does an extremely poor job to deny the opposition behind the arc. They rank 332nd nationally in defensive three-point percentage, allowing AO to make 36.9% of their attempts from afar. And to expose that weakness, AO will gladly launch the three all day and all night. Of AO's total field goals, a large chunk of them (42.8%) will be from long-distance. If Longwood does have a bright spot on defense, it would have to be their ability to limit the number of shot attempts by the opposition. The team has a defensive field goal attempt rate of 78.61 vs. AO, which ranks 48th-best in college basketball.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
