ANALYSIS: Per this website's calculations, Liberty is somewhere between an average to slightly above-average D1 ball-club. Ranked 119th overall (out of 358) in our most recent ratings, they presently have a record of 22-11. They are also ranked by this site as the best team (out of 12) in the Atlantic Sun (average ranking 237.5).
Based on their performances this year, Liberty will likely find more success on defense than they will on offense. Allowing about 98 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO, they currently occupy the #120 slot in the ratings for defensive efficiency. Liberty is a solid rebounding team that will deny the opposition chances to score off of offensive rebounds. They have a rating of 11.13 vs. AO in potential points allowed off of second chances (ranked 50th in the country). Liberty has also been pretty good preventing teams from hitting shots in the paint. They are ranked 75th in the country in defensive near-proximity percentage, allowing AO to make good on only 55.6% of their attempts from close-up. If Liberty does exhibit a noticeable weakness on the defensive end of the floor, it'd likely be the team's unwillingness to take risks in order to score fast points off of the opposition's turnovers. The squad only has a rating of 5.00 in potential points scored off of steals vs. AO, which ranks third-worst in the college game.
Liberty plays at about the same level on offense as they do on defense. The team ranks 129th nationally in offensive efficiency, scoring about 103 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Liberty lives and dies by the three-ball and will launch from long-distance early and often. The team ranks ninth in ratio of three-point attempts to total field goal attempts. If you do allow them to shoot from long, they have the ability to punish you for it, too. Ranked in the top-50 in three-point shooting percentage, they make approximately 37.3% of their three-point attempts vs. AO. Liberty also does a really good job converting from the free throw line. Making 75.9% of their attempts from the stripe, they are ranked 40th nationally in free throw percentage. Unfortunately, with a free throw attempt rate of just 20.89 vs. AO, they don't provide themselves a whole lot of opportunities at the foul line. If Liberty does have a glaring weakness offensively, it would have to be the team's difficulties obtaining second-chance opportunities from offensive rebounds. The squad only has a rating of 9.38 vs. AO in potential points off of second chances, which ranks 15th-worst in college hoops.
Liberty has definitely not been as efficient as of late compared to earlier in the season and, consequently, the team is nationally ranked 344th in positive momentum. Liberty has also been one of the most erratic teams in college basketball this year (currently ranked 347th overall in consistency), which makes the outcomes of their future games far more difficult to predict.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Liberty does worse vs. clubs that typically allow more than a fair share of breakaway opportunities. When playing squads that have a potential point rate allowed off steals vs. AO greater than 11.22, Liberty performs above average 29% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 78% of the time.
Liberty performs better against squads that do not defend well on the perimeter. When facing teams that have a defensive three-point field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 34.94%, Liberty is more efficient than normal 70% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 30% of the time.
When playing teams that have trouble defending the mid-range shot, Liberty usually performs worse than average. Liberty is more efficient than normal 30% of the time when facing clubs that have a defensive mid-range field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 37.28%. In all other contests, Liberty performs better than average 70% of the time.
