ANALYSIS: Despite what their win percentage might indicate, Pittsburgh is a good team that can cause more than enough trouble for most opponents. Haslametrics has them ranked 74th overall (out of 351) in All-Play Percentage, and the team holds a record of 16-17. Of the 15 schools in the ACC (average ranking 44.4), they're currently ranked as our #12 team in the conference. With a strength-of-schedule rating of 0.751 (which ranks 22nd nationally), Pittsburgh is one of the more battle-tested teams in the college game.
Pittsburgh has a reasonably potent offensive attack. Occupying the #48 slot in our offensive efficiency rankings, they will score about 110 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Pittsburgh has a keen ability to drain field goals between the three-point line and the low post. The squad is ranked 43rd nationally in mid-range field goal percentage, making about 39.6% of their attempts from those locations vs. AO. Pittsburgh is also one of the more accurate teams in the college game when it comes to shooting the three. They're ranked 44th nationally in three-point field goal percentage and make about 38.2% of their attempts from there vs. AO.
Pittsburgh is also a fairly decent team on the defensive end of the court. The team ranks 135th nationally in defensive efficiency, allowing about 101 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Pittsburgh is a superior unit when it comes to preventing opponents from getting to the foul line. With a defensive free throw attempt rate of 22.19 vs. AO, they are currently rated 23rd in the country in that category. If Pittsburgh does exhibit a weakness on the defensive end of the floor, it'd likely be the team's propensity to allow too many shot attempts per trip. The squad has a rating of 86.22 in defensive field goal attempt rate vs. AO, which ranks 27th-worst in college basketball.
Pittsburgh has been one of the more erratic teams in NCAA basketball this year (presently ranked 303rd in the country in consistency), which makes forecasting the outcomes of their upcoming games tougher than most. When playing on the road, Pittsburgh has played their best basketball this season. The team is currently ranked seventh in the country in the away-from-home metric our site tracks.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Pittsburgh does better vs. clubs that fail to defend efficiently inside the paint. When playing squads that have a defensive near-proximity field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 58.88%, Pittsburgh performs above average 80% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 39% of the time.
