ANALYSIS: While this site doesn't quite consider them to be in the national title hunt, Pittsburgh has the potential to be a formidable opponent for many in Division I. Carrying a record of 19-15, they are currently rated #75 overall (out of 351) in All-Play Percentage this season. Of the 15 schools in the ACC (average ranking 59.1), they're currently ranked as our #9 team in the conference.
The primary strength for Pittsburgh this year is offense. The team is ranked 44th in efficiency on that end of the floor, and they'll rack up more than 108 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO. Pittsburgh loves taking the mid-range two, far more so than most other teams. The club is ranked second in ratio of mid-range attempts to total field goal attempts. And they're extremely proficient at making that in-between shot as well. The team converts 42.3% of their mid-range attempts vs. AO, which ranks as fourth-best in the nation. Pittsburgh also does a pretty good job of protecting the ball when they have possession and not allowing quick and easy baskets off of their own turnovers. The team's rating vs. AO for potential breakaway points allowed off of steals is 9.02, which ranks #27 in the country.
Though they're not quite as efficient defensively as they are offensively, Pittsburgh still does OK when the opposition has possession of the ball. The team ranks 156th nationally in defensive efficiency, allowing about 100 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Pittsburgh does a fairly satisfactory job to deny opponents chances to score off of the offensive glass. They have a rating of 13.80 vs. AO in potential points allowed off of second chances (ranked 70th in the country).
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Pittsburgh is typically worse vs. teams that prefer the outside shot. Against foes that have an offensive shooting proximity score vs. AO greater than 1.95, Pittsburgh performs above their norm 25% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 77% of the time.
When facing teams that do a nice job converting inside the paint, Pittsburgh often performs better than normal. Pittsburgh is more efficient than usual 70% of the time when facing teams that have an offensive near-proximity field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 62.67%. In their other contests, Pittsburgh performs better than the norm 35% of the time.
Pittsburgh does worse vs. clubs that do not defend well on the perimeter. When playing squads that have a defensive three-point field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 31.48%, Pittsburgh performs above average 35% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 70% of the time.
