ANALYSIS: Despite what their win percentage might indicate, Kansas State is a good team that can cause more than enough trouble for most opponents. Haslametrics has them ranked 79th overall (out of 351) in All-Play Percentage, and the team holds a record of 15-17. Of the 10 schools in the Big 12 (average ranking 42.3), they're currently ranked as our #9 team in the conference. With a strength-of-schedule rating of 0.722 (which ranks 16th nationally), Kansas State is one of the more battle-tested teams in the college game.
The primary strength for Kansas State is defense. The team is ranked 57th in efficiency, allowing fewer than 95 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Kansas State does a super job to deny opponents offensive rebounds and second chances. They have a rating of 12.03 vs. AO in potential points allowed off of second chances (ranked 13th in the country). Kansas State has also been able to successfully prevent opponents from making shots between the three-point stripe and the low post. They're ranked 40th in Division I in defensive mid-range field goal percentage, allowing AO to make good on only 32.2% of their attempts from that distance.
Kansas State plays at about the same level on offense as they do on defense. The team ranks 106th nationally in offensive efficiency, scoring about 103 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Kansas State will routinely look to penetrate, pound the ball inside, and score from as short a distance as possible. The ball-club is 16th in the NCAA in ratio of near-proximity attempts to total field goal attempts. As far as converting those near-proximity shots goes, the team shoots 60.5% vs. AO, which falls somewhere in the middle of the pack of the rankings in that category. Kansas State also does a super job in their efforts to get to the free throw line. With a free throw attempt rate of 34.52 vs. AO, they are ranked 17th in the nation at getting to the charity stripe, where the team shoots a rather mediocre 67.5%.
Kansas State is one of the more consistent teams in Division I (presently ranked 28th in consistency), so forecasting the outcomes of their future contests tends to be easier than the norm. When playing on the road, Kansas State performs somewhat worse than they normally do on their home court. The club is nationally ranked 307th in our site's away-from-home metric.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Kansas State performs better against squads that favor a faster tempo. When facing teams that have a pace vs. AO greater than 66.20, Kansas State is more efficient than normal 82% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 38% of the time.
When playing teams that convert more frequently off of offensive rebounds, Kansas State usually performs better than average. Kansas State is more efficient than normal 77% of the time when facing clubs that have an offensive second-chance conversion percentage vs. AO greater than 8.12%. In all other contests, Kansas State performs better than average 37% of the time.
Kansas State is typically better vs. teams that tend to capitalize off breakaway opportunities. Against foes that have a potential point rate off steals vs. AO greater than 12.52, Kansas State performs above their norm 67% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 27% of the time.
