ANALYSIS: When you talk about the elite teams in college basketball this year, Kansas most definitely is in the conversation. Ranked second overall (out of 351) in our most recent ratings, they presently have a record of 33-5. They are also ranked by this site as the best team (out of 10) in the Big 12 (average ranking 44.4). Sporting a strength-of-schedule rating of 0.763 (the sixth-highest in the country), Kansas has prepared themselves by challenging some of the best teams in the college game.
Kansas will suffocate most opponents with its stifling defense. Allowing roughly 89 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO, this squad is rated #5 in defensive efficiency. Kansas will do a number on many an opponent's shooting percentage, as the team ranks in the top-25 in three of our four major defensive field goal categories. They allow AO to convert only 31.0% of their three-pointers (18th in the nation), 50.1% of their near-proximity attempts (fourth), and 37.8% of their total shots from the field (fourth). Kansas also does a fantastic job to prevent opposing teams from capitalizing on chances from offensive rebounds. The squad allows AO to convert only 4.4% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked seventh in the NCAA), and with a rating of 12.55, they're 28th in potential points allowed off of the offensive glass as well.
The scary thing is that Kansas is almost as powerful on the offensive end of the floor as they are on the defensive end of it. The team ranks eighth nationally in offensive efficiency, scoring about 118 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Kansas is an outstanding shooting team, capable of converting from a variety of locations on the floor and ranking in the top-50 in each of our four most noteworthy field goal categories. They make 41.9% of their three-pointers (fourth in the nation), 41.7% of their mid-range jumpers (tenth), 64.8% of their near-proximity chances (40th), and 50.4% of their total shots from the field (fourth) vs. AO. Kansas is also fairly competent protecting the ball on offense, which minimizes opportunities for the opponent to score quickly off of steals. The team's rating vs. AO for potential breakaway points allowed off of steals is 9.64, which ranks #75 in the country.
Kansas has been playing better basketball in their most recent outings, as evidenced by the team's #42 ranking in positive momentum.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
