ANALYSIS: Despite having a win percentage north of .500, Jackson State is definitely a below-average ball-club in college hoops this year. Their record this season is 12-6, and the club is ranked 327th overall (out of 357) in Haslametrics' most recent ratings. They are also ranked by this site as the #4 team (out of 10) in the SWAC (average ranking 326.5). With a strength-of-schedule rating of 0.264 (which ranks 339th in the nation), Jackson State has faced some of the easiest opponents in all of college basketball.
If there is a strength for Jackson State this year, it's probably on the defensive end of the court. The team is rated 148th in defensive efficiency, allowing fewer than 99 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO. Jackson State has been able to successfully prevent opponents from making shots between the three-point stripe and the low post. They're ranked 26th in Division I in defensive mid-range field goal percentage, allowing AO to make good on only 33.2% of their attempts from that distance. Jackson State also does a really good job to prevent opponents from getting off shots from the field. The club is ranked 50th in Division I in defensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of 78.86 vs. AO. If Jackson State does exhibit a noticeable weakness on the defensive end of the floor, it'd likely be the team's difficulties stopping opponents from obtaining second-chance opportunities via offensive rebounds. The squad has a rating of 17.31 in potential points allowed off of second chances vs. AO, which ranks sixth-worst in college hoops.
Unfortunately, Jackson State is not even remotely close to being as good on offense as they are on defense. The team is ranked seventh from the bottom in offensive efficiency, scoring about 83 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Jackson State is downright rotten when shooting the mid-range jumper. The team is ranked sixth from the bottom in field goal percentage from that distance, making only 30.3% of their mid-range attempts vs. AO. Exacerbating the situation, they find themselves in the bottom-10 in overall offensive field goal percentage, converting only 38.2% of all their attempts from the floor vs. AO. Jackson State also happens to be one of the very worst in the game when it comes to maximizing the number of shot attempts they get off from the floor. The team is nationally ranked 343rd in offensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of only 77.17 vs. AO.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Jackson State does worse vs. clubs that convert well from outside the arc. When playing squads that have an offensive three-point field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 30.44%, Jackson State performs above average 22% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 78% of the time.
Jackson State performs worse against squads that convert well from the charity stripe. When facing teams that have an adjusted free throw percentage vs. AO greater than 0.67%, Jackson State is more efficient than normal 30% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 75% of the time.
When playing teams that favor a faster tempo, Jackson State usually performs better than average. Jackson State is more efficient than normal 75% of the time when facing clubs that have a pace vs. AO greater than 70.55. In all other contests, Jackson State performs better than average 30% of the time.
