ANALYSIS: There are very few Division I teams that are as bad as Houston Christian is this year. Carrying a record of 6-23, they are currently rated #357 overall (out of 362) in All-Play Percentage this season. Of the 10 schools in the Southland (average ranking 273.2), they're currently ranked as the worst team in the conference.
Defense is the farthest thing from a strength for Houston Christian this year. The team ranks seventh from the bottom in defensive efficiency, allowing more than 117 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Houston Christian allows the opposition far too many easy shots from the floor and ranks in the bottom-25 in three of our four major defensive field goal shooting categories. They are exceptionally deficient defending inside the three-point line, allowing AO to make good on 45.5% of their mid-range jumpers (seventh from the bottom in the nation), 64.6% of their near-proximity chances (eighth from the bottom), and 48.9% of their total shots from the field (third from the bottom). Houston Christian also allows the opposition to get off far too many shots from the floor. The team is ranked 347th in the nation in defensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of 90.14 vs. AO.
Houston Christian doesn't rate much better on offense than they do on defense. Scoring roughly 92 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #349 in the nation in offensive efficiency. Houston Christian tends to be very careless with the ball and allows far too many breakaway opportunities off of their own turnovers. The team's rating for potential breakaway points allowed off of steals vs. AO is 16.78, which ranks fourth from the bottom in D1. Houston Christian also struggles to drain shots consistently from most spots on the floor, ranking in the bottom-50 in three of the four primary field goal shooting categories. They only convert 28.8% of their three-pointers (seventh from the bottom in the nation), 50.2% of their near-proximity attempts (352nd), and 40.9% of their total shots from the field (313th) vs. AO. Houston Christian lastly has had serious struggles making their free throws this year. Converting just 63.6% of their attempts, the squad is ranked #355 overall in free throw percentage. If Houston Christian does have a strength offensively, it would have to be the team's knack for obtaining second-chance opportunities off of their frequent misses. The squad has a rating of 17.05 in potential points off of second chances vs. AO, which ranks 33rd in all of college hoops.
Houston Christian has been one of the most erratic teams in college basketball this year (currently ranked 342nd overall in consistency), which makes the outcomes of their future games far more difficult to predict.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Houston Christian performs better against squads that do not defend well on the perimeter. When facing teams that have a defensive three-point field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 32.87%, Houston Christian is more efficient than normal 68% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 25% of the time.
When playing teams that are typically efficient on offense, Houston Christian usually performs worse than average. Houston Christian is more efficient than normal 25% of the time when facing clubs that have an offensive efficiency rating vs. AO greater than 105.42. In all other contests, Houston Christian performs better than average 68% of the time.
Houston Christian is typically better vs. teams that aren't terribly skilled defensively. Against foes that have a defensive efficiency rating vs. AO greater than 103.03, Houston Christian performs above their norm 71% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 30% of the time.
