ANALYSIS: Houston Baptist is not one of the better teams in Division I this year. They are ranked #345 (out of 357) in the most recent Haslametrics ratings and have a record of 6-19. They are also ranked by this site as the worst team (out of 13) in the Southland (average ranking 267.5).
Houston Baptist has a very sieve-like defense that gives up points way too easily. The team is ranked ninth from the bottom in efficiency on that end of the court and gives up more than 111 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Houston Baptist allows opposing teams far too many easy chances from the floor, ranking in the bottom-50 in three of the four main defensive field goal shooting categories. They are exceptionally deficient defending inside the three-point line, allowing AO to make good on 46.3% of their mid-range jumpers (eighth from the bottom in the nation), 63.4% of their near-proximity chances (308th), and 48.4% of their total shots from the field (341st). Houston Baptist is also one of the very worst teams in the game when it comes to preventing opponents from scoring off of offensive rebounds. The team allows AO to convert 7.2% of all second-chance opportunities (347th nationally).
Houston Baptist doesn't rate much better on offense than they do on defense. Scoring roughly 88 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #339 in the nation in offensive efficiency. Houston Baptist tends to be very careless with the ball and allows far too many breakaway opportunities off of their own turnovers. The team's rating for potential breakaway points allowed off of steals vs. AO is 14.62, which ranks 342nd in D1. Houston Baptist will also have a really tough time winning games when taking into consideration their shooting percentage near the basket. The team is ranked 338th in near-proximity field goal percentage, making only 52.4% of their attempts from up-close vs. AO. Moreover, they find themselves in the bottom-50 in overall offensive field goal percentage, converting just 40.3% of their total attempts vs. AO. Houston Baptist lastly does an extremely poor job drawing fouls and getting to the free throw line. With a free throw attempt rate of just 20.28 vs. AO, they are 336th in the overall rankings for that category.
Houston Baptist is one of the more consistent teams in Division I (presently ranked 44th in consistency), so forecasting the outcomes of their future contests tends to be easier than the norm.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
