ANALYSIS: Not one of the better ball-clubs in college basketball, Houston Baptist should be a fairly easy win for most capable opponents. They have a record of 4-25 and are ranked 336th overall (out of 353) in the latest Haslametrics ratings. Of the 13 schools in the Southland (average ranking 251.2), they're currently ranked as our #12 team in the conference.
Defense is the farthest thing from a strength for Houston Baptist this year. The team ranks second from the bottom in defensive efficiency, allowing more than 117 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Houston Baptist is the perfect antedote if the opposition is poisoned by bad shooting. This team gives up easy baskets like crazy no matter where the opposition shoots. They embarrassingly rank in the bottom-25 in each of the four major defensive field goal shooting categories. They allow AO to make 37.2% of their three-pointers (16th-worst in the nation), 46.5% of their mid-range jumpers (second-worst), 66.3% of their near-proximity chances (15th-worst), and 50.7% of their total shots from the field (second-worst). Houston Baptist is also one of the very worst teams in the game when it comes to preventing opponents from scoring off of offensive rebounds. The team allows AO to convert 8.4% of all second-chance opportunities (third from the bottom nationally), and with a rating of 15.40, they're 319th in potential points surrendered off of the offensive boards as well.
Even though the team ranks considerably higher in offensive efficiency, Houston Baptist isn't a powerhouse on that end of the floor either. Scoring roughly 98 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #198 in the nation in offensive efficiency. Houston Baptist isn't the greatest at protecting the ball on offense and, as a result, opponents tend to score more quick points off of steals than they normally would. The team's rating for potential breakaway points allowed off of steals vs. AO is 12.78, which ranks 296th in D1. If Houston Baptist does have a strength offensively, it would have to be the team's ability to sink threes. The squad converts 35.9% of their three-point attempts vs. AO, which ranks 47th in the nation.
Houston Baptist is one of the more consistent teams in Division I (presently ranked 34th in consistency), so forecasting the outcomes of their future contests tends to be easier than the norm. When playing on the road, Houston Baptist has played their best basketball this season. The team is currently ranked eighth in the country in the away-from-home metric our site tracks.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Houston Baptist performs worse against squads that do not defend well on the perimeter. When facing teams that have a defensive three-point field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 34.60%, Houston Baptist is more efficient than normal 33% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 70% of the time.
When playing teams that do a nice job converting inside the paint, Houston Baptist usually performs better than average. Houston Baptist is more efficient than normal 70% of the time when facing clubs that have an offensive near-proximity field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 56.92%. In all other contests, Houston Baptist performs better than average 33% of the time.
Houston Baptist is typically worse vs. teams that convert well from outside the arc. Against foes that have an offensive three-point field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 34.56%, Houston Baptist performs above their norm 36% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 72% of the time.
