ANALYSIS: Houston Baptist is not one of the better teams in Division I this year. They are ranked #316 (out of 351) in the most recent Haslametrics ratings and have a record of 6-25. They are also ranked by this site as the #11 team (out of 13) in the Southland (average ranking 251.2).
Houston Baptist has a very sieve-like defense that gives up points way too easily. The team is ranked 328th in efficiency on that end of the court and gives up more than 111 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Houston Baptist allows the opposition far too many easy shots from the floor and ranks in the bottom-25 in three of our four major defensive field goal shooting categories. They are at their worst when defending outside the paint, allowing AO to convert 39.2% of their three-pointers (331st in the nation), 41.8% of their mid-range chances (333rd), and 48.7% of their total shots from the field (328th).
Houston Baptist doesn't rate much better on offense than they do on defense. Scoring roughly 95 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #286 in the nation in offensive efficiency. Houston Baptist has had serious struggles making their free throws this year. Converting just 61.7% of their attempts, the squad is ranked #348 overall in free throw percentage. Houston Baptist also struggles to drain shots consistently from most spots on the floor, ranking in the bottom-50 in three of the four primary field goal shooting categories. They are worse off shooting inside the three-point stripe, making good on just 32.3% of their mid-range jumpers (328th in the nation), 52.3% of their near-proximity chances (335th), and 40.5% of their total shots from the field (324th) vs. AO. If Houston Baptist does have a strength offensively, it would have to be the team's knack for obtaining second-chance opportunities off of their frequent misses. The squad has a rating of 18.84 in potential points off of second chances vs. AO, which ranks 21st in all of college hoops.
Houston Baptist is one of the most consistent teams in NCAA basketball (currently ranked sixth in consistency), which makes the outcomes of their upcoming games far easier to predict.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Houston Baptist does better vs. clubs that typically allow more than a fair share of breakaway opportunities. When playing squads that have a potential point rate allowed off steals vs. AO greater than 11.59, Houston Baptist performs above average 70% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 22% of the time.
