ANALYSIS: Per this website's calculations, Hofstra is somewhere between an average to slightly above-average D1 ball-club. Ranked 112th overall (out of 358) in our most recent ratings, they presently have a record of 21-11. They are also ranked by this site as the #2 team (out of 10) in the Colonial (average ranking 182.1).
The primary strength for Hofstra this year is offense. The team is ranked 60th in efficiency on that end of the floor, and they'll rack up more than 107 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO. Hofstra allows very few breakaway opportunities for the opposition, which typically translates to fewer turnovers. The team's rating vs. AO for potential breakaway points allowed off of steals is 7.91, which ranks #7 in the country. Hofstra is also deadly accurate at the free throw line. Making 79.3% of their attempts from the stripe, they are ranked eighth nationally in free throw percentage. Though they typically convert their shots from the line, the downside is that they hardly ever manage to get there. The squad has a free throw attempt rate of 19.30 vs. AO (16th-worst in the nation). Hofstra is lastly superb at converting jumpers in between the three-point stripe and the low post. The squad is ranked 11th nationally in mid-range field goal percentage, making about 43.4% of their attempts from those locations vs. AO. However, even with their high conversion rate on mid-range attempts, this team usually settles for shots from other spots on the floor. Only about 24.1% of their overall attempts vs. AO are from those in-between locations.
Unfortunately, Hofstra is not even remotely close to being as good on defense as they are on offense. The team is ranked 213th in defensive efficiency, allowing about 102 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Hofstra does an extremely poor job to deny the opposition behind the arc. They rank 347th nationally in defensive three-point percentage, allowing AO to make 38.3% of their attempts from afar. If Hofstra does have a bright spot on defense, it would have to be their willingness to take risks in order to score fast points off of steals. The team has a solid rating of 16.34 in potential points scored off of steals vs. AO, which ranks ninth-best in college basketball.
Hofstra has definitely not been as efficient as of late compared to earlier in the season and, consequently, the team is nationally ranked 338th in positive momentum. Hofstra is also one of the more consistent teams in Division I (presently ranked 48th in consistency), so forecasting the outcomes of their future contests tends to be easier than the norm. When playing on the road, Hofstra has played their best basketball this season. The team is currently ranked 14th in the country in the away-from-home metric our site tracks.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Hofstra is typically better vs. teams that convert well from the charity stripe. Against foes that have an adjusted free throw percentage vs. AO greater than 0.73%, Hofstra performs above their norm 67% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 28% of the time.
When facing teams that fail to defend efficiently inside the paint, Hofstra often performs worse than normal. Hofstra is more efficient than usual 33% of the time when facing teams that have a defensive near-proximity field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 57.28%. In their other contests, Hofstra performs better than the norm 67% of the time.
Hofstra does worse vs. clubs that convert more frequently off of offensive rebounds. When playing squads that have an offensive second-chance conversion percentage vs. AO greater than 4.08%, Hofstra performs above average 33% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 67% of the time.
