ANALYSIS: Not one of the better ball-clubs in college basketball, Hampton should be a fairly easy win for most capable opponents. Carrying a record of 9-24, they are currently rated #336 overall (out of 362) in All-Play Percentage this season. Of the 14 schools in the CAA (average ranking 214.0), they're currently ranked as our #13 team in the conference.
Defense is the farthest thing from a strength for Hampton this year. The team ranks 341st in defensive efficiency, allowing more than 113 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Hampton is one of the very worst teams in the game when it comes to preventing opponents from scoring off of offensive rebounds. The team allows AO to convert 7.0% of all second-chance opportunities (338th nationally). Hampton also struggles on occasion to deny opponents opportunities to shoot from the floor. The team is ranked 336th in the nation in defensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of 89.59 vs. AO.
Hampton doesn't rate much better on offense than they do on defense. Scoring roughly 94 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #336 in the nation in offensive efficiency. Hampton is a lousy shooting team, incapable of converting efficiently from anyplace on the floor and ranking in the bottom-50 in each of our four most noteworthy field goal shooting categories. They make just 30.3% of their three-pointers (ranking 341st nationally), 33.8% of their mid-range attempts (344th), 53.1% of their near-proximity chances (314th), and 39.6% of their total shots from the field (345th) vs. AO. Hampton also has some difficulty protecting the ball efficiently when in possession, which leads to some quick and easy baskets for the opposition. The team's rating for potential breakaway points allowed off of steals vs. AO is 14.04, which ranks 335th in D1.
Hampton has been one of the most erratic teams in college basketball this year (currently ranked 350th overall in consistency), which makes the outcomes of their future games far more difficult to predict.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Hampton performs better against squads that allow a higher number of conversions off of the offensive glass. When facing teams that have a defensive second-chance conversion percentage vs. AO greater than 5.20%, Hampton is more efficient than normal 67% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 22% of the time.
When playing teams that allow a greater number of field goal opportunities, Hampton usually performs worse than average. Hampton is more efficient than normal 27% of the time when facing clubs that have a defensive field goal attempt rate vs. AO greater than 88.18. In all other contests, Hampton performs better than average 68% of the time.
Hampton is typically better vs. teams that tend to allow more shots on the perimeter. Against foes that have a defensive shooting proximity score vs. AO greater than 2.00, Hampton performs above their norm 80% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 40% of the time.
