ANALYSIS: As one of the worst teams in NCAA basketball, Hampton should be a pushover for the average-to-good squads in Division I. They have a record of 8-24 and are ranked tenth from the bottom overall (out of 363) in the latest Haslametrics ratings. They are also ranked by this site as the #12 team (out of 13) in the Colonial (average ranking 250.3).
Hampton has a very sieve-like defense that gives up points way too easily. The team is ranked eighth from the bottom in efficiency on that end of the court and gives up more than 113 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Hampton allows opposing teams far too many easy chances from the floor, ranking in the bottom-50 in three of the four main defensive field goal shooting categories. AO will convert a healthy 38.7% of their three-pointers (sixth from the bottom in the nation), 62.9% of their near-proximity attempts (314th), and 47.8% of their total shots from the field (348th). Hampton also gives up too many chances to easily score off of offensive rebounds. The team allows AO to convert 6.7% of all second-chance opportunities (327th nationally).
Hampton doesn't rate much better on offense than they do on defense. Scoring roughly 94 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #334 in the nation in offensive efficiency. Hampton is a lousy shooting team, incapable of converting efficiently from anyplace on the floor and ranking in the bottom-50 in each of our four most noteworthy field goal shooting categories. They make just 31.2% of their three-pointers (ranking 322nd nationally), 34.3% of their mid-range attempts (329th), 50.1% of their near-proximity chances (sixth from the bottom), and 38.5% of their total shots from the field (sixth from the bottom) vs. AO. If Hampton does have a strength offensively, it would have to be the team's knack for obtaining second-chance opportunities off of their frequent misses. The squad has a rating of 17.31 in potential points off of second chances vs. AO, which ranks 35th in all of college hoops.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Hampton does better vs. clubs that do not defend well on the perimeter. When playing squads that have a defensive three-point field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 33.65%, Hampton performs above average 68% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 33% of the time.
Hampton performs worse against squads that convert well from the charity stripe. When facing teams that have an adjusted free throw percentage vs. AO greater than 0.73%, Hampton is more efficient than normal 33% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 68% of the time.
When playing teams that allow opponents to shoot well from the field, Hampton usually performs better than average. Hampton is more efficient than normal 72% of the time when facing clubs that have a defensive field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 44.28%. In all other contests, Hampton performs better than average 39% of the time.
