ANALYSIS: Not one of the better ball-clubs in college basketball, Hampton should be a fairly easy win for most capable opponents. Carrying a record of 11-14, they are currently rated #309 overall (out of 357) in All-Play Percentage this season. Of the 11 schools in the Big South (average ranking 241.1), they're currently ranked as our #9 team in the conference.
Defense is not exactly a strength for Hampton this year. The team is ranked 315th in defensive efficiency and allows more than 107 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO. Hampton gives up far too many offensive rebounds and second chances to their opponents. The club has a rating of 16.82 vs. AO in potential points allowed off of second chances (ninth from the bottom nationally), and they let AO convert a healthy 6.5% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked 321st) as well. Hampton also allows the opposition to get off far too many shots from the floor. The team is ranked 345th in the nation in defensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of 87.30 vs. AO.
Hampton doesn't rate much better on offense than they do on defense. Scoring roughly 93 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #284 in the nation in offensive efficiency. Hampton is not one of the better teams at drawing fouls and getting to the free throw line. With a free throw attempt rate of just 21.98 vs. AO, they are 287th in the overall rankings for that category.
When playing on the road, Hampton has played their best basketball this season. The team is currently ranked 16th in the country in the away-from-home metric our site tracks.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Hampton performs better against squads that typically allow more than a fair share of breakaway opportunities. When facing teams that have a potential point rate allowed off steals vs. AO greater than 12.44, Hampton is more efficient than normal 77% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 42% of the time.
