ANALYSIS: Regardless of what the win percentage says, Gardner-Webb isn't a very good team this year. Ranked 185th overall (out of 353) in our most recent ratings, they presently have a record of 23-12. Of the 11 schools in the Big South (average ranking 213.3), they're currently ranked as our #7 team in the conference.
Based on the data, Gardner-Webb will likely find more success on offense than on defense. Scoring about 104 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO, they currently occupy the #148 slot in the rankings for offensive efficiency. Gardner-Webb is one of the more accurate teams in the college game when it comes to shooting the three. They're ranked 29th nationally in three-point field goal percentage and make about 38.1% of their attempts from there vs. AO. Though they convert many of their threes, the team doesn't really shoot a ton of them. Only 35.0% of their total attempts vs. AO are from long-distance. Gardner-Webb has also been fairly successful when shooting from the field. The squad is ranked 59th in the country in field goal percentage, making approximately 46.5% of their attempts vs. AO. If Gardner-Webb does have a glaring weakness offensively, it would have to be the team's difficulties obtaining second-chance opportunities from offensive rebounds. The squad only has a rating of 9.65 vs. AO in potential points off of second chances, which ranks 13th-worst in college hoops.
Gardner-Webb doesn't perform as well defensively as they do offensively. The team is ranked 232nd in defensive efficiency, allowing about 107 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Gardner-Webb is one of the very worst teams in the game when it comes to preventing opponents from scoring off of offensive rebounds. The team allows AO to convert 8.0% of all second-chance opportunities (333rd nationally). Gardner-Webb has also done a pretty poor job this season to prevent opponents from making shots from the inside. The team is ranked 308th in the country in defensive near-proximity percentage, allowing AO to make good on 64.3% of their attempts from close-up.
Gardner-Webb has been playing much better basketball as of late and is presently ranked seventh in positive momentum because of it.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Gardner-Webb does better vs. clubs that do a nice job converting inside the paint. When playing squads that have an offensive near-proximity field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 55.87%, Gardner-Webb performs above average 74% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 23% of the time.
Gardner-Webb performs better against squads that fail to defend efficiently inside the paint. When facing teams that have a defensive near-proximity field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 63.58%, Gardner-Webb is more efficient than normal 82% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 38% of the time.
When playing teams that tend to allow more shots on the perimeter, Gardner-Webb usually performs better than average. Gardner-Webb is more efficient than normal 67% of the time when facing clubs that have a defensive shooting proximity score vs. AO greater than 2.02. In all other contests, Gardner-Webb performs better than average 27% of the time.
