ANALYSIS: While not an atrocious team by any means, FIU is not exactly one that should appear in many top-100 rankings either. Carrying a record of 14-18, they are currently rated #225 overall (out of 351) in All-Play Percentage this season. They are also ranked by this site as the #11 team (out of 14) in Conference USA (average ranking 170.5).
Based on their performances this year, FIU will likely find more success on defense than they will on offense. Allowing about 102 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO, they currently occupy the #160 slot in the ratings for defensive efficiency. FIU does a bang-up job preventing the opposition from draining jumpers in between the three-point line and the low post. They're ranked 21st in Division I in defensive mid-range field goal percentage, allowing AO to make good on only 33.2% of their attempts from that distance. Due to this fact, AO will take nowhere near as many mid-range shots as they typically would and, as a result, only 23.0% of AO's field goal attempts will come from those in-between locations. FIU will also look to secure a relatively healthy number of easy scoring opportunities off of steals. They're ranked 51st in potential points off of breakaway steals vs. AO with a rating of 13.08.
The offense for FIU, on the other hand, isn't nearly as efficient as the defense is. The team is ranked 272nd in offensive efficiency, scoring about 96 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. FIU has had serious struggles making their free throws this year. Converting just 61.9% of their attempts, the squad is ranked #347 overall in free throw percentage. FIU also won't enter the conversation if you're looking to list the best three-point shooting teams in the country. They are ranked 324th in three-point field goal percentage nationally and make just 31.6% of their attempts from long vs. AO.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
FIU does better vs. clubs that convert well from outside the arc. When playing squads that have an offensive three-point field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 34.26%, FIU performs above average 77% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 8% of the time.
FIU performs better against squads that shoot the ball well from the field. When facing teams that have an offensive field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 44.10%, FIU is more efficient than normal 89% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 30% of the time.
When playing teams that are likely to allow more second chances off of offensive rebounds, FIU usually performs better than average. FIU is more efficient than normal 69% of the time when facing clubs that have a defensive second-chance potential point rate vs. AO greater than 13.65. In all other contests, FIU performs better than average 23% of the time.
