ANALYSIS: FIU presently has one of the below-average teams in college basketball. Ranked 268th overall (out of 351) in our most recent ratings, they presently have a record of 16-17. Of the 14 schools in Conference USA (average ranking 186.1), they're currently ranked as our #12 team in the conference.
FIU is not one of the better offensive teams you will find. They are rated #308 in efficiency on that end of the court and only score about 92 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO. FIU tends to be very careless with the ball and allows far too many breakaway opportunities off of their own turnovers. The team's rating for potential breakaway points allowed off of steals vs. AO is 15.85, which ranks fourth from the bottom in D1. FIU also happens to be one of the very worst in the game when it comes to maximizing the number of shot attempts they get off from the floor. The team is nationally ranked 338th in offensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of only 76.51 vs. AO. If FIU does have a strength offensively, it would have to be the team's ability to obtain and convert second-chance opportunities from offensive rebounds. The squad has a second-chance conversion percentage of 8.7% vs. AO, which ranks 21st in the nation.
Even though the team ranks considerably higher in defensive efficiency, FIU isn't a powerhouse on that end of the floor either. Allowing roughly 102 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #183 in the nation in defensive efficiency. FIU can be weak on rebounding, giving the opposition too many chances to score off of the offensive glass. The club has a rating of 18.13 vs. AO in potential points allowed off of second chances (326th nationally). If FIU does have a bright spot on defense, it would have to be their ability to prevent opponents from draining shot attempts in between the three-point line and the low post. AO will convert just 32.4% of their mid-range field goal attempts, and the team is nationally ranked 50th-best in that category as a result.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
FIU performs worse against squads that favor a faster tempo. When facing teams that have a pace vs. AO greater than 65.80, FIU is more efficient than normal 27% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 69% of the time.
When playing teams that convert more frequently off of offensive rebounds, FIU usually performs worse than average. FIU is more efficient than normal 29% of the time when facing clubs that have an offensive second-chance conversion percentage vs. AO greater than 6.77%. In all other contests, FIU performs better than average 65% of the time.
FIU is typically better vs. teams that allow more chances at the line. Against foes that have a defensive free throw attempt rate vs. AO greater than 29.92, FIU performs above their norm 69% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 33% of the time.
