ANALYSIS: While not an atrocious team by any means, Duquesne is not exactly one that should appear in many top-100 rankings either. Ranked 228th overall (out of 351) in our most recent ratings, they presently have a record of 12-19. They are also ranked by this site as the #13 team (out of 14) in the A-10 (average ranking 120.8).
Based on the data, Duquesne will likely find more success on offense than on defense. Scoring about 103 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO, they currently occupy the #103 slot in the rankings for offensive efficiency. Duquesne does a pretty good job of protecting the ball when they have possession and not allowing quick and easy baskets off of their own turnovers. The team's rating vs. AO for potential breakaway points allowed off of steals is 9.37, which ranks #35 in the country. Duquesne also has a keen ability to drain field goals between the three-point line and the low post. The squad is ranked 45th nationally in mid-range field goal percentage, making about 38.5% of their attempts from those locations vs. AO. If Duquesne does have a glaring weakness offensively, it would have to be the team's poor shooting at the line. The squad makes just 63.1% of their free throw attempts, which ranks 18th-worst in Division I.
Unfortunately, Duquesne is not even remotely close to being as good on defense as they are on offense. The team is ranked 323rd in defensive efficiency, allowing about 109 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Duquesne allows the opposition to get off far too many shots from the floor. The team is ranked seventh from the bottom in the nation in defensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of 88.32 vs. AO. Duquesne also gives up far too many offensive rebounds and second chances to their opponents. The club has a rating of 18.98 vs. AO in potential points allowed off of second chances (341st nationally). Duquesne lastly does an extremely poor job to deny the opposition behind the arc. They rank 333rd nationally in defensive three-point percentage, allowing AO to make 38.3% of their attempts from afar. And to expose that weakness, AO will gladly launch the three all day and all night. Of AO's total field goals, a large chunk of them (39.1%) will be from long-distance.
Duquesne has been one of the more erratic teams in NCAA basketball this year (presently ranked 306th in the country in consistency), which makes forecasting the outcomes of their upcoming games tougher than most. On the road, Duquesne performs noticeably worse than they do at home. The team is currently ranked 337th in the country in the away-from-home metric we track.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Duquesne does worse vs. clubs that convert well from outside the arc. When playing squads that have an offensive three-point field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 35.76%, Duquesne performs above average 22% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 67% of the time.
Duquesne performs better against squads that do not defend well on the perimeter. When facing teams that have a defensive three-point field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 33.82%, Duquesne is more efficient than normal 73% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 33% of the time.
When playing teams that allow more chances at the line, Duquesne usually performs better than average. Duquesne is more efficient than normal 78% of the time when facing clubs that have a defensive free throw attempt rate vs. AO greater than 31.11. In all other contests, Duquesne performs better than average 43% of the time.
